Great, Murat! Looking forward to meet you and your wife!

I haven't made any plans yet, did not get that far in my preparations as I've decided to visit Istanbul only a few days ago. Since then all I managed to do was browse through websites of different hotels looking for suitable accommodation cause you have soooooo many hotels there! But I'm coming alone and strictly on holiday so I'll be very flexible and open to all suggestions, esp from knowlegeable locals.

Mitat, great to hear that you will be joining us at the VT meet! The more, the merrier :) Don't know about Saturday yet, will let you know about that via e-mail when I finalize my plans.

Regarding the meeting place, I got the following suggestions:
1. Nevazade
2. French street.
As I obviously don't know either, could I ask one of you locals to pick one and possibly suggest the exact meeting point?

Only seven more days :)

Travel Tips for Istanbul

the wonder

by manuelEB

It is no the longest, it is not the tallest, it is not the
widest...But is one of the most important bridges in the World. It's an Intercontinental bridge!!! It 's just marvelous to cross and realize that you are
leaving Europe to be in Asia, or the other way around. In how many places in the world you can fell this?
Yeah , yeah. In Tijuana!!!! The North America "Continent" and the back yard "Continent". Can you believe if I tell you that Istanbul is all her a
fondest memory?

A Lesson in Turkish

by Firestar24

Wherever I travel, I always try to pick up a little bit of the local language and happily I found Turkish easy to pick up and remember.

Try this link for a brilliant video with a whole heap of useful Turkish phrases. Fantastic!

Here's a few examples:
Hello = Merhaba (merharba)
Good Morning = Gunaydin (goo nay dun)
Goodbye (person leaving) = Allaha Ismarladik (ala ushmall a duk)
Goodbye (person staying behind) = Gule Gule (gooleh gooleh)
Please = Lutfen (lewtfen)
Thank you = Tesekkur ederim (t shek a ed erin)
What is this? = Bu ne? (Boo nay)

My phoenetic spelling isn't great - check out the link for more helpful and accurate phrases!

You could also try Before You Know It who offer free downloadable software for just about every language in the World and use a flashcard system to teach languages. BYKI Lite is free - be warned they will keep sending you mail to try to get you to upgrade but it's harmless junk and well worth it for the free software.

Kariye Camii (Chora Church)

by MalenaN

Many tourists come here so it might not be off the beaten path, but it is quite far from the other tourist attractions in Sultanahmet Area.

Chora/Kariye was built as a church , but has also been used as a mosque. Now it is a museum. The building now standing was built during the 11th century. Inside there are beautiful mosaics from the 14th century. The mosaics are mainly in the ceiling and high on the walls, so be prepared to feel it in your neck.
In a side chapel there are impressive paintings from the same period as the mosaics.

The yard outside the museum is peaceful and a nice place to sit in for a while.

Entrance fee is 10 000 000 TL.

To go there from Eminönü take bus 32, 37, 38 or 910 and ask for Karyie Camii.

The Grand Bazaar

by duke0123

A visit to the Grand Bazaar is an interesting experience. In a maze of streets there are thousands little shops. A lot of products are exposed outside the shop and of course the salesmen are trying to let you buy a lot of things.
If you want to buy souvenirs this is a very good place to do so.

The Bazaar is founded by Mehmet II in 1453. The complex can be entered through several gates. In spite of the director indicators, it is very easy to get lost in the Bazaar.

In the Bazaar it is also possible to drink or eat something. And if you don't want to buy anything, just walk around look around. Famous are the carpets and leather jackets. If you want to buy this, it's all up to you, but there a lot of shops which offere this kind of merchandise.
