I like the Rough Guide, and found its Istanbul guide to be exactly what I wanted.....its streetmaps for each area are very useful.

Travel Tips for Istanbul

Instanbul in winter

by lucy60

During winter, Istanbul is very cold and windy. But don't mind. I have visited a lot of time Istanbul in winter (especially during Christmas and New Year); it's very cold but every museum and moschea and church is open. There are not many tourists, so you may visit the town quietly. One time I saw the town covered by snow: fantastic. Of course, it's not good for swimming. Beaches are not interesting because of rain. Why don't go in Cappadocia, it's always a fantastic site (I visited in summer) but I think it'd be a mystic experience to visit with snow, in winter. Istanbul and Bosphorus covered by snow.

The Language Barrier Question

by June.b

I don’ t believe that language would be a major issue in Turkey. More and more people are speaking English in Istanbul and major cities, not fluent but you could find some who could speak basic english. And even if it would be hard to find anyone speaking English, you will find that there’s a common language that both parties could communicate well - that’s your kind & polite attitude and the local people’s genuine interest in conversing and helping tourists.

However, if all spoken language fail…. you have your hands and body for gestures. And in the end don’t forget to say “Tesekkur Ederim” (Thanks a lot).

Somehow things work and you’ll be surprised how the conversation went for a long time. Lots of locals also speaks german, dutch and even nihonggo, especially in most tourist-oriented places.

Turkish Coffee

by Erkmen

After having your meal in Istanbul, you will be asked if you would like to have something to drink.. Many restaurants are offering Tea and Turkish coffee services at the end of the dinner free of charge.. So you shall enjoy the taste of the Turkish coffee..

Turkish coffee is well known through worldwide.. Though it tastes like an espresso, it has a different taste and smell..

There are many ways to make Turkish coffee, but most agree that the most reliable method for producing consistently good coffee is to fill a 250 ml. Finjan to within 2 1/2 cm. of it with cold water. To the water, before heating, add 4 or more heaping teaspoons of coffee. For moderately sweet coffee 2 tsp. of sugar should be added. The mixture should then be stirred and put on a high flame. As the mixture approaches a first boil it should be removed from the flame for a few moments to let the foam settle. One should take care not to let the mixture boil over, for this will result in a very messy stove top. :)

Theodosian Walls.

by bugulma

On the East of Istanbul you can find the old fortification walls. It is so named Theodosian Walls, built in V century. Originally it had 96 towers and wall 5 meters thick and 12 meters high. The fortification length is 5.5 km long. Very amazing place, these fortifications.

THE FIRE TOWER

by balhannah

The fire watching tower, built in 1749 was first built of wood.

The one that you see now is the 3rd one to be built and is now made of stone. It is made up of 4 compartments, the guard floor, the signal floor, the basket floor and the banner floor.
The 85 meter high fire tower was restored in 1997 and is in use again for fire watching, meteorological and motoring reports.
Only 256 steps to the top!

It is quite an impressive sight, but you are not allowed inside it. It is located in the Universities Grounds.

Its not far to walk here for a look if you are at the Grand Bazaar.

WHERE.... Fuatpasa Caddesi
