Hotels close to Historical sites, blue mosque with a suite and cheap!

by thefurman

Hi,
I will be taking my wife to Istanbul for 8 days in the middle of August. Neither of us has been before and she has not travelled much in the past.

I am looking for a boutique hotel with a suite or room with a view/balcony close to the Blue mosque and other historical sites. I might be asking a bit much but I want to spend 70 Euros on the room per night. I did come across the Ataturk hotel but I read that it wasn't that nice to stay in.

Any help and advice would be appreciated.

The hotel must be in the Sultanahmet area - close to the blue mosque :)

for boutique hotels the best site to look at is

www.nisanyan.net

it is their business to find the best small hotels in Turkey! (and they do it very well)

of those listed I know Ibrahim Pasa Otel, it is right opposite the Blue Mosque with a fantastic roof terrace it has a suite but it isnt cheap.

Celal Sultan is also lovely and Kybele (I have had friends stay in all three)

of the Nisanyan recommendations: Alzer Hotel looks good, as does the Ararat, Fehmi Bey, Sari Konak, and Nomade and are closer to your budget. It looks like all of them have roof terraces with views over the sea and /or the mosques.

Berk is a good price but I am not sure whether it has views.

I think you will be hard pushed to find a room with private balcony or a suite below 150 euros.

However do negotiate the price, I think you will be able to get your room for less than the quoted prices if you talk to the hotel direct, especially as you plan to stay 8 days.

I would love to hear how you get on with your plans!

Sultanahmet hotels

by spence3787

we are 3 adults and expect to pay at least $100. The Fehmi Bey, Seres and Empress Zoe have been recommended. Any personal knowledge of these places?

No opinion but I suggest you to stay at Taksim.. There is only sight seeing in sultanahmet but Taksim is the heart and its close to sulanahmet. app100 for 3 adult you can find good hotels and this is off season

You should have no problem in that price range. I've heard good things about Zoe. Ask about larger suites for a group your size. They do have some funky stairs to climb.

I have also enjoyed the Hotel Uyan. Nice hotel, very good prices. Hotel Ambassador is great as well (a little more expensive).

Just be warned: When you walk around the Sultanahmet area you will constantly be approached by carpet salesmen wanting to escort you to their shop. They are polite, not dangerous, but very persistent.

Travel Tips for Istanbul

Bargaining with taxi fares

by muratkorman

There are so many taxis in Istanbul which gives some bargaining power to travellers. If you know about how much it will cost your journey, you may bargain with the driver. If there are many free taxis around, he may accept your offer. Usually I bargain for avoiding night fares. After midnight, it will cost you 50% more the same travel. However, you can ask the driver to charge you from usual day tariff. Another strategy could be telling how much you are willing to pay for the ride. If he is not keen on accepting your offer, move on. He can pick you up instead of staying idle for a long time.

PRINCES ISLANDS - KINALIADA ISLAND

by balhannah

The first stop on the ferry is Kinaliada Island, which is closest to the mainland and one of the smallest islands.
The Island is called this because of the color of the red colour of its soil. You will know when you reach here as it has a lot of Antenna towers on it.

Ottoman Greeks and their Armenian neighbors have built Ottoman-Victorian summer villas on the island, and there is a Monastery, a few Churches and a Mosque.

The Island is so small that it can easily be walked in 30mins. There are many small beaches here, and they are a little less crowded than the other Princes Islands.

Turkish lights

by ogb4619 about Colorlights

As you're walking through the shopping areas of Istanbul, you'll see many shops displaying these beautiful traditional lights.

One of the main suppliers is "Colorlights", based in Istanbul.

We loved these lights so much that we decided to buy a quantity of them to put in our restaurant in Seremban (Malaysia).
The lights are partly hand made and designed to operate with a "tea-light" candle. We spent a few $ and converted them to electricity.
They look really beautiful in our shop.

The lights (lamps) were used in the palaces and stately homes of early Turkish rulers and the tradition has been carried on by companies like Colorlights. You can't buy one. To install them in your house or commercial premises, you need at least 3. We bought 35. The small ones will cost around US$8 while the larger and more intricate shapes and colours will cost up to US$80.
