Accommodation in Istanbul

by Bywaters

Hi there My husband and I are planning a 4 day trip to Istanbul in September and would like to stay in a guest house or B&B. The Terrace Guest House sounds good - does anyone know it? Any other suggestions? Fairly Inexpensive if possible - but with some character.
What's the weather like in mid September? Any other tips gratefully received!

the side hotel and pension is really nice and in a very good location and the owners are very friendly folks:

and september is in my opinion the best time of year to visit istanbul with average temperatures around 25 degrees celcius.

I've stayed in the Terrace several times in the last 3-4 years. It has lots of character.

I'd recommend it (see my Istanbul tips) - I keep going back, so that says it all.

Never been there in September.

Many thanks for that - I really appreciate it.

Hi all, side hotel and pension has a very nice location , the owners are nice ; but Casaheiro you just forgot to say that it is expensive (70 € for a hotel room, about 50 for a pension one ) and you have to pay cash when you arrive.

Re: Accommodation in Istanbul

by cachaseiro

i paid 40 euros for a room in the pension there 8 months ago and i was shopping around the area and found that the rooms that were cheaper than that were also considerably worse.
that is fine if you just need a simple backpacker room (i am happy with that most times myself) but i had the feeling that our friend here was looking for something of a decent standard.

Re: Accommodation in Istanbul

For 40€ there is better in pensions. But I must admit that side is very clean.I hated the room I had 'in hotel part" it was dark, I hated the breakfast too.Sorry!

Re: Accommodation in Istanbul

i never tried the hotel part so i can't speak for that.
i was really around the last time i was there as i had a group coming that wanted a good price, but also something clean with their own bathroom and that was impossible to find for less than 40 euros if i had to meet their standard.
i am personally happt staying in a 20 euro pension myself.

Hotel rooms are not different, they just have a bathroom, a tv , a telephone used only to call the reception .There are no views from the windows , you know the road.Beds are the same! the terace is nice , but this is all. When did you stay there?

hello,

you may try SED hotel if you wish, their location is very nice and very easy to find. The hotel is comfortable and their room are very clean. They are just located at the back handside of German embassy in Taksim area of Istanbul. Their telephone number is +90 212 252 27 10.I do not have too much opinion about their price level, you may keep in touch and have some idea about their price level if you wish.

Travel Tips for Istanbul

by tompen

From this park, you can easily walk down to the waterfront. You will pass by restaurants and an open market with all sorts of goods being sold in the streets. The restaurant owners and the carpet shop owners will come out to solicit your business. But they are very friendly and not too pushy. At the waterside you can catch a tour boat to other places.

Coffee, Coffee, Coffee

by mightywease

I love strong coffee so I really love Turkish coffee. It is the perfect way to end a meal, particulary if accompanied by some Baklava.
If you want to buy some coffee to take home with you I would recommend Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi (Tahmis Caddesi 66, very near the Spice Bazaar). Smells lovely and tastes even better!

Football Capital of Turkey.

by voyageur2

Football is number one sport in Turkey. And the famous "three giants" are Istanbul clubs.
Galatasaray is well known in Europe. It is the first and only Turkish winner of UEFA cup. Fenerbahce and Besiktas are other great clubs having a century old tradition and magnificent history. So football matches and competition are another essential colour of that big city. Inonu Stadium-Besiktas

Commisioned by the foundation of Nur-u Banu Sultan, wife of Sultan Selim II, and the mother of Murat III, Çemberlitas public bath was built in 1584. Based on a plan of the legendary Turkish architect Mimar Sinan, the bath is one of the most important works of 16th century Ottoman architecture.

Do you like Turkish delight?

by ozalp about Ali Muhiddin Haci Bekir

If you like candies you’ll love Ali Muhiddin Haci Bekir. As far as I know, it is the oldest candy maker brand in Istanbul. They are making lokum and candies since 1777.
Even if you do not have Turkish delight (Lokum) in your shopping list, pay a visit at one of his shops. You can find them easily in Eminonu, on Istiklal Street or in Kadikoy. I recommend you to try double- baked lokum with hazelnuts, almond cookies and pastries with walnut and tahin (sesame paste). They have many kinds of candies. If you have appetite I advise you to taste as much as you can.
