Great Hostel in city center

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on August 6, 2007

We stayed here with a group of 5 for 4 nights and the hostel was great. Clean rooms, well kept bathrooms, nice lounge area upstairs (also roof terrace), and cheap cold beers!
Staff is very friendly and helpful with tips. Airport shuttle Service.

Would definitely recommend this guesthouse/hostel to anyone trevelling to Istanbul.

Unique Quality: Location just off the restaurant/bar street leading up to Topkapi palace. Tourist attractions in Sultanamet all in walkinmg distance, Galata only a short taxi ride away. Free breakfast in the morning with tea, coffee is an extra.

Directions: In the area between the topkapi/blue mosque line and the Bosphorus.

A Hostel Away from home

Best (5.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on April 7, 2007

This is by far one of the best affordable places in Istanbul. I was the typical skeptic about not staying in a "proper" hotel, but this place fit the bill for me. I did book a private room, but the atmosphere and the social networking that I did there was great. I would not have wanted to stay in a group room, but the private room is affordable and the accomodations clean. You cannot beat the location either. Easily accessible. This hostel is worth a try. If you want to stay here call for a booking, dont wait too long because its a nice place it fills up fast.

Unique Quality: From the roof the view is great and there is a hosted party during the summer months that I highly recommend. Even if you are not staying there..you would be welcome by the staff and residents of the house.

If you are a hostelworld junkie, this sounds like the dream hostel on their website (I have issues with it but for another day) with over 500 hundred ratings singing the praises of the place. It's not that this was not a good place to stay, especially at 9 Euro a night just a short skip away from the Sultanahmet (blue) Mosque that dominates the area, it's just that it's not a great as the hostelworld webpage makes it out to be. The 8 bed dorm was fine and had huge lockers which are only good if you have your own padlock. Only one bathroom on the top floor where I stayed so folk on the roof nip down there too. The free brekkie is nice but not filling. The restaurant offers one meal a day for 8 Lira (4Euro) total but you can just have soup for 2 Lira, although this is cheap for western travellers you can get excellent chýcken kebabs for 5 Lira nearby if you move away from the hardcore tourist areas. The internet is totally crap, save yourself a headache and go to find another place, the time that would take would be the time it would take Google to load at Bahaus!! The wonderful soundýng DVD lounge was also a no go as DVD player was not working (guests apparently broke it, so why didn't they throw it away and buy a new one? It was sitting in the cabinet!) The 4 staff members I encountered ranged from a little sleazy to Mr 'I hate my job' Grumpy although Nojuh (spelling?!) was really helpful and attentive. Maybe I have been too harsh on the place, it was a good base in Istanbul for 3 days but, in the style of Columbo, there is just one more thing bothering me. If they have received hundreds of ratings through hostelworld, why did I not receive an email to rate them like I have for other hostels? Just how do they keep that glowing reputation??

Unique Quality: The rooftop bar was a nice touch but September evenings can be pretty chilly!
