 | Best Western Acropol Hotel: Poor service, and poor value for money

I stayed one night at Hotel Acropol in October 2006. We had booked a room here, but when we arrived the hotel had overbooked, so the receptionist told us we'd have to move to another hotel, which was fine by us. The receptionist said we'd pay the Acropol rate of 105 euro / night, and the Acropol would later arrange for the payment to the hotel we actually stayed in. He then told us we'd be staying at the Avicenna - which we knew cost 45 euro / night. That's a 60 euro difference per night, and I would call that a rip-off! We protested, and the receptionist decided he had a room for us after all. Not a great start to our stay. According to the Acropol's own description on the website we booked through, bookings.org, the double rooms have "balconies and great views of the Bosphorus and the Blue Mosque" - the reality is slightly different. Most of the rooms do *not* have balconies, and from our room we saw straight into a wall. Our standard twin room was quite small, and reasonably clean. It had two comfy beds, but the promised "seating area" consisted of a small work desk and one stool. Amenities included a minibar and a tiny tv. The bathroom (no bathtub, as opposed to what the description on bookings.org said) was in need of renovation. The hotel does have a WiFi connection, which is free of charge - but it didn't work for several hours. (The receptionist told us there were internet problems in the entire area, but the internet cafes nearby were up and running.) The aircon was very noisy, and the walls seemed to be *very* thin - if you are a light sleeper you might have to buy ear-plugs! We booked 3 nights - but we only stayed 1. It is *very* easy to find a better hotel in the Sultanahmet area - and it's even easier to find a hotel that offers better value for money! We paid 105 euro / night (through bookings.org) and that's fairly expensive for Istanbul. (Their room rates vary *a lot* with the season - but unless you get a room here for, say 25 euro /night I'd say you're paying too much!)
I posted a review of this hotel on TripAdvisor, and almost immediately got an email from the management of the Acropol, asking me to delete my review and write a more positive one - for a compensation. I refused, and have since received several very abusive emails from the hotel management - and a number of glowing "reviews" of Acropol have since been posted on TripAdvisor. I would therefore take some of the reviews that exist for this hotel, with a pinch of salt! by EricMAx76 We stayed in Acropol in September 2008 with my friends. The hotel has a very good location, you can walk to all main touristic attractions such as Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque,Hagia Sophia. Hotel roof top restaurant has a great view of Marmara Sea, we enjoyed our dinner there many nights, the staff was very helpful and food was nice. Our room was big enough and clean with the view of Saint Sophia. We had a very well sleep there. The rooms has double glazed windows, you can not get any noice from outside. The street is very attractive, there are many restaurants cafes, and bars. The breakfast was open buffet and self service, there was no queue, We enjoyed the having our breakfast at the outside cafe. I really enjoyed my stay in acropol and I will recomed to my friends. Overall, we can say THUMBS UP....
