Visiting Turkey during Eid Holidays

by lust4adventure

Hi,

My husband and I are planning a trip to Turkey in September (beginning to middle) 2010. It'll fall around Ramadan and Eid time. Will shops and sights will be open during Eid time, which falls around September? Is it a good time to travel and will alcohol be available during the Ramadan time, which will be early September? Please advise since we would like to eat freely, drink and enjoy ourselves during our travels.

Thanks a lot.

Eid in Turkey is generally a public holiday and is to be celebrated on 10th September. Expect public offices to be closed. eg post offices. Some businesses may also be closed for part of or all of the day.

Turkey is very secular. I would be surprised if any of the restaurants would stop serving alcohol for ramadan!

NO PROBlEMS! Most restaurants and clubs are open during the Ramazan and Eid. In fact, you will see more interesting profile of people out in those places during the fast. the only problem is traffic.. when sun comes down. followers are in hurry to eat, so watch out for those hours

Sorry but we dont call the holday Eid. But "Bayram".Eid is an arabic word used in arab world not in turkey. Only the first day of bayram all the shops, restaurants museums are closed. Because Turkish muslims visit their older family members or cemetaries of their vorfathers. have a nice holiday in Turkey.

Travel Tips for Istanbul

A cruise on Bosphorus

by violeta13

The cruise is an excellent way to see the palaces, the mosques and the old wooden yaldwellings along the shores. Definitely the best way to see Istanbul! The silence of the sea (even if the traffic on Bosphorus is quite busy!) comparred with the noisy town.

How far is the Airport to the city center?

by June.b

Ataturk Airport is less than 25 kilometers away from the city center (European side – Sultanahmet or Taksim). About 30 to 45 minutes ride, depends on the traffic of course. For the most economical transportation option from Ataturk airport to Sultanahmet or Taksim, you may go to Transportation Tips .

While the other smaller Sabiha Gökçen Airport which is located on the Asian side (Kurtkoy) is far from Sultanahmet or Taksim, about 40 kilometers.

I’ve never been there but you may checkout their website to find out mode of transport to the city .

"EVIL EYE"

by balhannah

When wandering Turkey, you will notice Bracelets, Pendants, Painted china, Tiles, in fact items too numerous to mention, what is known as an 'EVIL EYE.'

It is a common symbol throughout the Middle East and dating back many thousands of years, it is traditionally thought to ward off negative energy from others which can lead to bad luck.
You may also see them hanging above doors or dangling in car windscreens. They are usually made out of cobalt blue glass with a stylised eye design.

So, buy an evil eye charm, to ward off the ‘evil eye’.
They don't cost a fortune, make a great souvenir.
I brought a few home to give as gifts to children I know who love this type of thing!

Don't miss the movies even on holidays :))

by Gokcecicek

I am cinema addicted. After coming back from holidays I always buy many vcds to watch the movies I missed. What if I can not find a movie that I want to watch? I call my friends and we go to Kafika. (Quicker than Amazon :) Ka-fi-ka means Kacirdiginiz filmler kahvesi which means the cafe of the movies you missed. Here is its adress:

Kuleli Military High School

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

Kuleli Military High School is the first military high school, located in Çengelköy, close to Üsküdar It was founded in 1845 by Ottoman Sultan Abdülmecid I.
Because of the war between the Ottoman Empire and Russia in 1877-1878, the school was decided to be a hospital.
I could see it from apart when was crossing the Bosphorus by city-boat.

You can watch my 2 min 50 sec HQ Video Istanbul Bosphorus Uskudar Eminonu part IV out of my Youtube channel with Turkish pop music.

You may watch my high resolution photo of Istanbul on the Google Earth according to the following coordinates 41° 2' 41.72" N 29° 1' 44.60" E or on my Google Earth Panoramio Kuleli Military High School .
