AKBIL DETAILS

by HINAQURESHI

Hi everyone!
I need to know the exact method of using and being charged of the akbil.
We are a group of 7 people and we currently have two akbils that we plan to use in July when we get to Istanbul.I need the following questions answered:

1. I have heard that all transfers within 45 minutes are free, if this is true how do we manage with 7 people?
2. How will the free transfer work in ferries and tram mixture journey?
3. Is the akbil about to be discontinued?
4. Does the akbil work for Bosphorus tour ?

Thanks
Hina

Hi Hina,

If you use 2 akbils for 7 people, you won't be able to save money on transfers because the same akbil will be charged at least 3 times in each stop. The ferries and trams work the same way as metro and bus services. They all have akbil slots and if you just combine your journeys you will have discounts. There are rumours about discontinuation of akbil, but no official announcement made yet. If you will be travelling frequently using ferries, trams, bus and metro, I suggest you get one akbil per person. I am not sure about the Bosphorus trip, but other VT members can confirm that. Enjoy Istanbul, I will be there next week :)

Hi.

1 - Yes transfer within 45 minutes is free but if you use for sevenral people you gel only one discount, just for one person.
2 - Same for bus, tram, and ship.
3 - Don't understand your request.
4 - No.

Travel Tips for Istanbul

Weather Report

by mehbos37

In Istanbul we call weather -female- as it is always unpredictable..

It has a similar climate like New York....Rainy and snowy in winter...Rainy but mild in spring..Hot and breezy in Summer..
And again rainy and turning colder in Autumn..

In winter time we can experience snows like this:-)

Turkish hospitality - it pays to go local

by BlueLlama

This might just have been my experience, but I found that in Istanbul at least the famous Turkish hospitality wasn't always much in evidence. Well, in the tourist areas and shops at least. Contrary to what the guidebooks say we'd had pretty indifferent service (my box of Turkish delight was fairly hurled at me in one shop!) until we stepped off the tourist trail.

Going into a shop that sold men's hats and caps in Galata was like stepping back in time; the service and attention was of the standard you don't see in western Europe most of the time. The owner was determined to ensure satisfaction with the cap my boyfriend bought and it was the first occasion our attempts to speak a little Turkish raised a smile.

We found the same thing with eating out. The restaurants in Sultanahmet, with some notable exceptions, seemed to have a pile-em-in approach where the good cheer ended as soon as you were safely in the door. Not so in the smaller shops where owners were keen to see us enjoy their food (often cooked by wives at home and arriving intermittently) and ply us with free samples.

So it pays to seek out smaller shops and food outlets. You'll be offered a much warmer welcome.

Pack list for the weather

Since many VTes are asking me about the weather there.Let me tell you something; 4Winter and Autumn
anything for winter:
boots,gloves,hat,shawl,sweaters,umbrella,raincoat,coat, etc
in winter,Istanbul is cold and snowy most of times.Usually, the weather starts getting bad within end of november till middle of march.
Autumn is warm and rainy or warm and sunny ( you never know)

4Summer and Spring
Anything for summer included ;sandals, umbrella, raincoat,a few sweaters (can be rainy sometimes)
Istanbul is humid and hot in Summer and rainy and sunny in Spring (most of times is sunny and fresh there)
Suggested time to go is spring (april, may) and autumn (september, november) you dont need to bring anything you can anything there.Pharmacies are open bwtn 9a.m. -7.30 pm. Besides these times ,you can find "Nobetci Ezcane" which open after 7.30 pm till the morning. To find those Pharmacies on guard just check the the windows of the closed pharmacies. You will see a list there, which tells you the addresses of closest guard pharmacies around there you can find anything, you dont need to bring anything. Camping areas are out of Istanbul either Outdoor Gears. Beacher are in Prince's Island and out of Istanbul which names Kilyos. ISTANBUL Turizm Polisi (The cop of the tourist)

Boat trip continues

From Duatepe Hill, on the European side, you can admire the magnificent panorama of the bridge and the Bosphorus. Below Duatepe, beautiful Emirgan Park bursts with color when the tulips bloom in spring. Opposite, on the Asian shore is Kanlica, a fishing village now a favored suburb for wealthy Istanbulites. Crowds gather in the restaurants and cafes along its shores to sample its famous yogurt. Shortly after Kanlica and Çubuklu is the Beykoz Korusu (Abraham Pasa Woods), a popular retreat. In the cafes and restaurants you can enjoy the delightful views and clear fresh air. On the European side, at Tarabya Bay, yachts seem to dance at their moorings. The coast road bustles with taverns and fish restaurants from Tarabya to the charming suburbs of Sariyer and Büyükdere. Sariyer has one of the largest fish markets in Istanbul and is also famous for its delicious varieties of milk puddings and börek (pastries). A little further on past Sariyer, the narrow strait widens and disappears into the Black Sea.
