Travel Tips for Istanbul

Use the Instanbul Tram!

by JeremiahK

The tram is a nice and convenient way to get around the city -- will take you comfortably and cheaply from Sultanahmet to Eminonu and more. Get off at Eminonu, where you can walk across the bridge to Galata Tower for sweeping views of the city, take a cruise on the Bosporus, visit the spice market, or sit for a minute and eat a fresh fish sandwich.

The Blue Mosque...

The Blue Mosque...

There are always enough local people around to give you sort of a 'private' tour inside the Blue Mosque - provided you're willing to pay 3-5 Million TL (don't pay more!). I found it very helpful to be able to understand at least 2 languages (German & English), because while I had a German-speaking tour-guide, I held my 'English ears' open to listen also to the other tour-guide beside me & I've got some interesting info's about the place which my actual tour guide didn't tell me about :)
If your guide doesn't mention the reason why they keep 3 ostrich-eggs in each Mosque - ask him! It has to do with a legend about the Prophet Mohammed...
Try to find out & then feel free to mail me - it would be interesting to know, if they change stories as they like or if they stick to it ;o)

Galata Bridge - Fishermen's heaven

by ophiro

While walking across Galata bridge we saw a lot of fishermen.
It was during the night and also in the morning - a lot of fisherman and seagulls waiting for a chunk from the catch.
Fishing rod , bait , bucket for the fish and a lot of patience.

NARGILE (Hookah)(WaterPipe)
One of the oldest and deep rooted traditions in Turkey is the Nargile (Hookah), with both men and women finding great pleasure in smoking the waterpipe. The nargile started a whole new culture which endured for many, many years. Even today the nargile gives enjoyment to a special breed of smokers.
The nargile itself consists of 4 pieces which are as follows: Agizlik (mouthpiece), Lüle (the top of the nargile), Marpuç (the tube) and the Gövde (the body of the pipe which is filled with water). All pieces of the pipe were produced by special craftsmen, who were named after the pece they produced. Even today, the areas where these craftsmen used to concentrate are called by these names, such as 'Marpuççular.'
There r many choices for you in for nargile such as just 'tönbeki'(the hardest),apple flavoured, melon flavoured, strawberry flavoured. etc...
you should try ...

Here are a few rules for bargaining, in case you are new to it:
- Don't point at something to show it to your friend...
- Relax... they are going to try very hard to get your attention.
- It's more polite to say "next time" than "no."
- Don't ask the price unless you're prepared to bargain..
- When bargaining, their first price is NEVER their last! Neither should yours be. Start much lower than what you want to pay, then get more reasonable.
- Try to ask someone who is experienced in shopping for Senegalese souvenirs for what a good price is. (Don't ask someone who is selling them!).
- Relax!
- Walking away is a good technique to get a lower price. So is greeting in Wolof.
- Don't be in a hurry... you'll end up paying more.
- "All that glitters is not gold,"... and all that is black is not ebony.
- BUY LOTS OF STUFF!! Remember your trip forever!
