Weather in Istanbul in early APRIL

by elwanda

Can someone please tell us the Fahrenheit Temp. in early April, 2010? Need spring/weather clothes/coat?

Climate tables here:

and conversion tool here:

Average min is around 44F, average max around 61F. Of course, averages can be misleading...it may be warmer or colder.

You will need clothes you can layer, and a coat, and something for wet weather (it can rain).

I was there in April a few years ago and it was freezing weather because of a major storm north of Turkey. Take a jacket and clothing you can layer to cover all contingencies.

Due to extreme climatic changes the World is experiencing at the moment, trying to predict the weather can be difficult because of local, on the day variations.
Most places now are seeing weather conditions well outside the norm.
The information below should be used as a guide only.

Here is the average weather for Istanbul for this time of year.
Enjoy your holiday.

High 61f / 16c
Low 45f / 7c
Rain 2.00in / 51.0mm
Rain days 11
Hours of sun 8
Daylight hours 13
UV level 5 = Moderate
Humidity = None
Sea temp 51f / 10c

I agree with the others. Dress in layers. A sweater/sweatshirt and light jacket will most likely be enough. We were there last April and the only place I was cold was out on the Bosphorus. By the way, it was a lovely time to go since the Tulip Festival was in progress - thousands of different colored tulips planted around the city. Enjoy Istanbul!

Shesh-Pesh (Backgammon), game of choice

by Martin_S.

What better way to share a few hours of relaxation with your wife, play a few games of Tavla(Shesh-Pesh in Hebrew, means six-five, like on the dice) and have a cup of tea. Tavla, called Backgammon in English (have NO idea why), is a typical, and popular, middle-eastern game that has taken root also in the US. We play this often in Israel also of course and it was fun "doing it in the streets" of Istanbul. If you don't know how to play this game, you can ask for instructions, it is usually easy to find someone who is willing to give you a hand. You can find coffee/tea houses that have small tables like this with the Tavla sets just waiting for you. Sit, drink, play and watch the world go by...
Thanks to Sectionforeman for pointing out that Tavla is the correct name of Shesh-Pesh in Turkey.

Yildiz park: Is this still Istanbul??

by goatee010

The Yildiz park is stituated North of the European part of the Centre. We entered it from the north and were surpised by the silence. It was as if we walked through a little forest. Good if you just want to relax for a bit . And hard to understand considering there are still millions of people living around it. It was a nice walk down to the lake (which was dried up) and then continue the walk to the Bosporus.

by balhannah

This large Fortress was built in 1452 by Sultan Mehmet II on the European side of the Bosphorus strait.
It was hoped that it would block any possible sea support which might have come from the Black Sea to assist the flailing Byzantines.
It has 3 main towers, a huge wall with 13 bastions. The main tower later became a prison.

It is situated on the narrowest point of the Bosphorus strait, facing The Fortress of Asia. The construction of this fortress only took 4 months!
It was restored in 1953 and is an open air museum.
There is also an outdoor mini-amphitheater used during the various music festivals in Istanbul.
