Ramazaan
by mvtouring
We arrived there at the beginning of Ramazaan and end of the holy month. Take care when making your bookings that you are not here during this period as all the shops closed for 4 days whilst they celebrated the end of the holy month. Whilst walking around the old town, we came across this tent, where the locals went to go and eat. We were not sure if the food was supplied for free or if they had to pay. Was quite a qeue to get in though.

PRINCES ISLANDS - BUYUKADA ISLAND
by balhannah
BUYUKADA ISLAND is the largest Island in both area and population of the Prince's Islands, is also the furthest from Istanbul, and its here where most people get off the ferry. It has a historical pier and large market place.
In the 1940's it became popular as a summer residence for the rich people. During this period beautiful, elegant pavilions were built.
There are two public beaches, one of which is situated in an beautiful cove.
Haghia Yorgi church and monastery stands on top of Yucetepe. The first building was constructed in the 6th century A.D. Remains of many churches and monasteries can still be seen there. Thousands of Turkish citizens and tourists visit this church on April 23 and September 24 every year. According to Christian belief the people who climb this hill are considered half pilgrim (to visit Meryem Ana – Virgin Mary Church in Ephesus is necessary to be considered as pilgrim.)
Restaurants and cafes line the seashore near the pier and there are some hotels and pensions.
The journey to here takes about 1hr and 40mins, so you arrive about lunchtime.
Before you leave the Ferry Terminal, be sure to check the return times.
Come early to return to Istanbul, as most people catch the last ferry, and you may not get a seat.
The Ferry I returned on, took a different route back to Istanbul.
"Hey, sir..."
by bdwoot about grand bazaar
"Sir, your wife, she looks cold, she needs a new leather coat."
"Sir, do you love your wife? If you do, buy her a new necklace right here."
"Sir, do you have a minute?..."
And on and on. Sales resistance is easy here, and you need it every minute in this place. Cheap leather goods, incredible silversmiths, evil eyes of every size and description, Russian icons, tourist crap, and more stuff than I can recall. The more willing you are to walk away, the cheaper it gets.
