Sirkeci or sultanahmet...is there any difference?

by tan1415

Looking at different hotels...located in either sirkeci or sultanahmet.

The places are close to each other it seems. Which is teh best place for location:

With regard to neighbourhood(liveliness, shopping, dining etc)
transportation(how close is teh trams?)
closeness to the sights

So far i have the following hotels: Ilkay, Metropol, Golden Crown and Ambassador.

I'd rather stay in Sultanahmet than Sirkeci, since Sultanahmet is livelier and more historical. Sirkeci is a bit more like commerical area though it's 10 minutes walking distance to Sultanahmet as Yavuzhan mmentioned before.

I just returned from Istanbul couple weeks ago and I stayed in Sultanahmet hotel Uyan. This was great, since this area is relly close to main turist attractions - Blue Moske, Hagia Sofia, Topkapi palace. Every morning I woke up from muedzin's call and view over Bosforus was seen from the breakfest room. Hotel also was good - clean, cosy.
If I where you, I would definetely choose Sultanahmet.
Have a nice trip

Topkapi Palace help please

by markgilbey

Hi, I am gong to Istanbul and only have a few years old copy of a lonely planet book.

I am bit confused about its tickets / general guide to Topkapi palace.

As i understand it, i buy 1 ticket to get in, have to pay another to go on a guided tour of the harem and another for the treasury.

from my map, it seems that the harem is quite large, but the treasury is only a few rooms, is this correct?

I see it is quite expensive to visit both, will i miss out on much if i dont see the treasury - will i be able to see the fourth court without buying a ticket for the treasury. what does a treasury ticket include and is it worth it?

cheers. mark.

The treasury is an exhibition of the riches aqcuired by the Sultans through the ages. You'll see jewelry with countless rubies and sapphires, golden thrones, priceless robes etc. It's definately worth seeing. Although I must say that seeing all of this excessive wealth made me feel a bit 'drained of energy' somehow. It's so extravagant and out of balance; after you've seen one golden crown beset with diamonds, sapphires and rubies, you've seen them all. But anyway, go and see for yourself. I doubt there are many other places in the world where you can see so many priceless treasures as in Topkapi.
You can see the forth court without buying a ticket to the treasury.

There is 3 part in Topkapi museum. You have to buy 3 diffrent tickets if you want to visit them. First is genereally if you want to visit all Palace. The second for the tresure and yes how you say its only form 3-4 rooms. The third part is Harem and is one of the best places here in Topkapi. Its not able to visit this places without tickets. the tickets cost aprox. 7-8 Euro...
If you need any other questions please don't hesitate to ask us..I am in Istanbul always...:)))

Hi Mark,

If you have time and don't have a very tight budget, I recommend to see all of the Palace.

Alper.
