Quite nice experience
It's not a big hotel with about 20+ rooms with fantastic positioning if you prefer Beyogly district. The hotel is just a few steps from Taksim and Istiklal but at the same time it is very quite around.
Most rooms have fantastic view of Bosforus, especially those on upper floors. For the rooms with nicer view, it's better to contact hotel directly and book them in advance.
However the breakfasts are poor and it's better to use Istiklal opportunity to have a nice local breakfast.

Bad administration
This hotel reservation scheme via expedia and Globalres does not work effectivley and I (a business traveler) along with a others who we met at the hotel on our two day stay all had a story about lost reservation, being referred to ther hotels, not getting the room booked and paid for, reservations cancled with no notice, changing payment terms to cash / payment upfront.
If you do not speak Turkish and are unwlling to argue for yoiur booking, do ot expect to have a trouble free check in / check out.

yucelt hostel is a great place with freindly staff and a good social scene.
pansion side is a good choice if you want a private room.
they are both located in sultanahmet, next to the blue mosque.

Here are two cheap choices in the heart of the city:
1. Silviya Hotel. Very new rooms, quite simple but has TV, bathroom etc. 20 USD for a single room. In Beyoglu.
2. Chill Out Hostel. Same area, friendly, I guess 10 USD per room.
3. If you want to make it better, Butik Star Hotel in Taksim is very nice, Bosphorus view, great rooms, still cheaper than big hotels. I am not sure the price at the moment, but should be around 50-70 USD.
By the way, I stayed in your country more than a month in 1998 and I loved it!

Every time I have been in Istanbul I have stayed at Side Pension in Sultanahmet. It is a very nice place and rooms with shared bathroom at the pension side (thee is also a hotel side) is now 20 Euro a night. The shared bathrooms are very clean. Breakfast is served on the roof with a very nice view over the roofs and the Blue Mosque and Aya Sofia.

Chill out Hostel for 10 Dollars may be a good alternative.
Hotel Asya costed about 6 Euro per Person and night last year, Hotel Yeni Aydin 10 Euro. They are a bit "old", but clean (of course). Bathroom is on the floor.
Are you sephardic? Maybe I could give you some tip or adress.
