Nargileh

I knew it before as hookah or kaliyan. The places you can smoke negrileh are easily to be found. I did it near of my hotel, in Sultanahmet district, not far from Blue Mosque. In my opinion negrileh is not strong in comparision with United Arab Emirates and even kaliyan that I smoked in Russia.

Information correct as at December 2001

When arriving at Istanbul Airport do not proceed through the immigration control unless you already have a valid visa. The visa office is to the left of immigration, and they will place a sticker into your passport for the appropriate fee. Visitors from will be charged £10 sterling, and I believe visitors from the USA will be charged $46. When you proceed through Imigration they will endorse your visa sticker.

A word of advice. At every stage of your journey within the airports you will need to produce your passpot and aircraft boarding card. Even when you think you won't require them again, believe me, you will!! So put them in one convenient place, either a pocket or your handbag.

There is more visa information in my Travelogue for visitors from other countries.

The Basilica Cistern...

by travelmad478

The Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Saray) is sort of UNDER the beaten path. It's one of the coolest places to see in Istanbul--a huge underground water tank held up by hundreds of columns, a few of which have obviously once been used for other purposes...see my photo! Sometimes there are art exhibits held in here--it's a great place for an installation.

Leather shopping

by Avryle about Kirclair Istanbul Deri

High quality leather, current and classic styles and prices are NOT set. Also, sales staff is very efficient and helpful. Its a bit out of the way, but the quality of merchandise is worth it. With about a bazzilion sheep slaughtered in the country each year, leather goods are plentiful and very much affordable. Treat yourself to a new leather jacket or a knockoff Gucci bag. I was able to get a lamb leather jacket knocked down from 320.000.000 TL to 250.000.000 TL (roughly $145 USD) I'd probably expect to pay $800 USD for the same quality jacket at home.
