First time visitiors would be wise to stay in a hotel in the Sultanahmet neighborhood, which is the oldest neighborhood in the city and the area where Hagia Sophia, the Hippodrome, etc. are located. Public transportation to other parts of the city from here is convenient.
The Fehmi Bey hotel just off the Hippodrome offers unpretentious, but clean, inexpensive and very convenient accomodations. The hotel is an old fashion Turkish house converted to a small hotel. The views from the fourth floor breakfast room are nothing less than stunning.
The staff is pleasant and helpful, the hotel will pick you up at the airport when you arrive.
Unique Quality: The Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, the Hippodrome and the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts are all within 2 minute walk, except for Hagia Sophia, which is 5 minutes away.
Directions: Sultanahmet neighborhood, just off the Hippodrome.
Had planned to stay about 6 days here, ended up extending my stay to about 13 days. The roof top terrace provided wonderful views of the Blue Mosque & harbour.
The hotel was just 2 minutes from the Hippodrome, Blue Mosque,Aya Sophia & Cistern. Main street just 5 minutes away.
The morning breakfast varied from olives, feta, tomato, cereals etc.... + freshly squeezed orange juice.
Hotel staff were very helpful & spoke English, probably French as well because there were alot of French visitors.
Unique Quality: The hotel room was fresh, spotless & cleaned daily. Beds were very comfortable & the room size adequate. Bathrooms were very clean & smelt fresh. Air conditioners were very good & quiet & overall so was the hotel. Didn't notice any obtrusive street noise.
Views from the terrace are superb day & night, with a great comfortable laydown lounge it was perfect after a hard days sightseeing. See picture
Directions: Walk past the Blue mosque until you come to the end of the Hippodrome, turn right & it is a 3 minute walk.

I'm staying at Fehmi Bey, just 3 minutes from the Hippodrome, Blue mosque etc... . Nice roof terrace too. Price about 80 euro for dble bed. They have a web site.
I have stayed at Side Pension every time I have been in Istanbul and I can really recomend it. There is a nice rooftop area from where you can see both the Blue Mosque and Aya Sofya, and where breakfast is served.
