Great rates, clean rooms in Istanbul
by midnight_mike about Tashkonak Hotel
If you want to stay in the Sultanahment district, the Tashkonak is the nicest of the budget hotels. It really does not look like a budget hotel at all. It just has really great room rates. The hotel offers two suites, both with private terraces. The one I stayed in had two rooms, one with two twin beds and the other with a queen bed.

DINNING
As many amazing sites that there are to see in Istanbul it is sometimes nice in your travels to escape to a quieter spot and sit back and enjoy the view. The Hotel Tash Konak offers 24 hr access to their private roof-top terrace. This quiet spot boasts an incredible view. Enjoy your complimentary turkish breakfast while overlooking the harbour action of the Sea of Marmara, or sl?p up late at night for star gaziing and a peak at the Blue Mosque, breath taking in the night sky. The terrace is a lovely addtion to the hotel. It is the perfect place to read or relax before hitting the busy streets of Istanbul. For the dinner you will have difficulty to choose from the large menu of traditional Turkish Cuisine. Best way is to follow chief's recommends.

The staff at Tashkonak was great

We stayed at the Tashkonak Hotel during Easter week , one of the busiest periods for Istanbul, and had a great service. Our room was very small, but the staff definitely made up for it with their service. One evening, we were looking for a place to eat our take-out dinner with friends, and they opened the top floor dining room for us. When the wireless service was down, they let us plug in directly into the modem so we could get our work done. The day we left, we should have missed breakfast, but they brought it into our room an hour earlier than the buffet opened.
Our room was equipped with a small fridge (with reasonably priced beverages and snacks), TV, and wireless internet, and had a little private balcony. Breakfast was included with the room, and has been a decent buffet on their terrace on the top floor, from which there is a view of the Blue Mosque.
Awful experience

We made a reservation with our travel agent for Tashkonak Hotel in early Feb 07. For our surprise when we arrived on Apr 7th there was no room available and they transfered us to another hotel (actually an apart-hotel - Konak Otel in Eminonu). In this hotel there were dirty glasses and garbage in the kitchen and nobody could speak English. We had to have breakfast in a restaurant a few meters away and usually if we got there at 8 am, there was no one available and we had to wait... At the end of our trip they contacted our travel agent and offered us to not pay for our stay.
Very good experience

We stayed at the Tashkonak Hotel just one night, May 19. It is in a great location, just about a 5-7 minute walk from the Blue Mosque. The staff at the hotel were extraordinarily friendly, especially Ergin at the front desk. Our room was a typical European hotel room, i.e., small but clean. It had a nice, updated bathroom. There is no elevator, but they'll take your bags to your room. The rooftop terrace has a wonderful view of the bay and all the ship activity, and breakfast there is a delight. The hotel shuttle to the airport was very reasonably priced and right on time. If you want a big American hotel flavor, skip this one. If you want an intimate, small hotel feel of Istanbul, we would recommend this hotel without hesitation.

Hotel Sumengen or Mina or...
by Vaiva
As I have plenty of time until my trip to Istanbul, I would like to hear any suggestions about these hotels (it is really difficult to choose):
Sumengen hotel
Mina boutique hotel
Tashkonak hotel
Megara boutique hotel
Allstar Daphne hotel
I've read good recommendations of these hotels. I have also heard that Uyan and Zeynep Sultan hotels are nice...
