Day trip to Ephesus from Istanbul - book on line before arriving Istanbul or not?
by LHoughton
We are visiting Istanbul again at the beginning of May and would like to take a day trip to Ephesus, flying to Izmir. Has anyone done one of these organised tours from Istanbul? If so, would you recommend it and is it better to book it on the internet or wait until we arrive?
Thank you

I wouldn't do it!
I've been to both places several times.
Ephesus becomes crowded really quickly ---you need to be there, first in the queue for the best experience!
I would suggest that you enjoy more of Istanbul ----and then save Ephesus for another time! Come on! It's an excuse to return!

The site is in Turkish (unsurprisingly!) and, alas, I don't speak Turkish - can't find an English page for this website. Thanks for the info anyway.

If you are a young couple I advice you to take the night bus to Selcuk from İstanbul.(Varan, Ulusoy, are good companies) You will be in Selcuk in the morning at 10:00. Selcuk is the nearest town to Ephesus. it is 7 kms away. you can have every minute a minibus called dolmush to the entrence of the ruins. After visitinh the ruins and the home of virgin mary you can take the night bus to Istanbul. you will be exhausted and tired but worth to do that. have a nice time.

Kahramanmaras Dondurmasi
by maykal
Turkish ice cream is very different to its european counterpart...for a start, it is a lot thicker and can be eaten with a knife and fork if you wish. The reason for this is that it is made with crushed orchid root, which explains how the ice-cream sellers can throw whole lumps of the stuff into the air and pound it with a huge stick. Its sticky quality also helps them play tricks with their customers and some of them are real showmen attracting quite a crowd.
Kahramanmaras is the city most famous for this ice cream, and dondurma means ice cream. The dondurma comes in three or four different flavours, and you'll generally be given a selection of all without being asked :)
Walking the Walls - 2
by mightywease
.. continued from above
The old gates to the city are generally in quite good repair and close to one we were able to gain access onto the, reconstructed, outer wall and terrace, the latter also filled with allotments. Though a bit ramshackle and rather a rubbish dump in places this part of the walk was fantastic as hidden from view we walked in solitude between the inner and outer walls watching butterflies flit between vegetables and trying to imagine what it must have felt like to be hunkered down in one of the towers waiting for an incursion or attack.
Later we passed through some more traditional neighbourhoods and stopped for tea at an outside café near the Topkapi Gate where we had a wonderful part English, part Turkish, part sign language conversation with some of the other customers who were interested to know where we had been, where we were going and how we liked Istanbul.
All in all it took us about 2 hours to complete our walk, arriving at the Kariye Camii Museum with a sense of achievement and some good memories. I wouldn’t recommend this walk for everyone it was tiring, it wasn’t always attractive – meaning the main road really – and certain sections of the walls are rather deserted and I wouldn’t want to tackle them on my own, however, it provided some of my most abiding memories of Istanbul and I am really pleased we did it.
You can join the walls at various places – bus 80 goes from Eminonu to Yedikule and buses 37E and 38E go from Edirnekapi, near the Kariye Camii Museum
Sultan Mahmud II Mausoleum
by Kuznetsov_Sergey
It is located on the street side of the Sultan Mahmud II mausoleum on Divanyolu Street in Cemberlitas, the Public Fountain was built with the mausoleum in 1840. The fountain, covered by marble with a domed ceiling was designed in a classical style and resembles a kind of round antique temple. The iron gratings and the sign on top of the dome are especially interesting.
