Air Couriers and Ticket Consolidators
Air Couriers
There are two interesting sites that provide information and links about these two alternatives in budget traveling.

Your Mining Co. Guide to Budget Travel at http://budgettravel.miningco.com/ msub1.htm is a great site for those on a tight budget It offers links and brief explanations about flying as a courier, stand-by travel and using ticket consolidators.

“The Budget Traveler's Guide to the Universe” at http://www.ugcs.caltech.edu/~zane/travel/oldindex.shtml offers insights and numerous links to air courier services and traveling space available as well..

Ticket Consolidators and Bucket Shops
There are many ticket consolidators and bucket shops on the Internet. Unfortunately, not many of them offer tickets to Istanbul. Below is a brief listing of those who do offer ticketing to Turkey. You can also easily locate budget airfares by perusing the Sunday travel section of your local newspaper.

You should carefully select a reputable operator. For a travel agent Edward Hasbrouck’s perspective on how to best purchase an international ticket see
http://www.travel-library.com/air-travel/consolidators.html .

Below is a list of ticket consolidators who offer tickets to Turkey:

Australia
APP International Travel at http://www.cheapafares.com says that since they were founded in 1982 they have grown to a major wholesaler of very discounted tickets on the international market.
Timeless Tours at travtour@timeless.com.au is a travel wholesaler. They sell air and land arrangements in Turkey to both the travel agents and also direct to the public. (They don't have a web site, but we've provided a link to their e-mail.)

Canada
Butte Travel Service Ltd. at http://www.freenet.edmonton.ab.ca/butte says they offer very good prices to Turkey. They say they have been providing travel information and reservation services to the Edmonton community for more than 30 years.

England
Air Travel Advisory Board at http://www.atab.co.uk will provide with a list of travel agents and bucket shops that offer tickets to Turkey.

Germany
Graumarkt.Reisen at http://www.graumarkt.de reports they offer discount tickets for flights from any German airport to Turkey as well as any airport in the world. They say they have good ideas for travelers, are STA agents and can provide the best and cheapest student fares. They also say they have the best charter fares you can get in Germany.

Korea
BoraNet Travel at http://www.tiss.com (English) and http://www.boranet.com (Korean) says they offer the lowest air price and air ticket booking on Internet

Switzerland
Topas Reisen AG - Topas Travel Ltd at http://www.topas-reisen.ch reports that they offer special rates and charter flights to Turkey covering the cities of Istanbul, Izmir, Bodrum, Antalya and Dalaman.
USA

Adventure Travel at http://www.greencis.net/~ats/special.shtm says they are a one stop source for worldwide travel. They say they offer the lowest prices around for airfares, cruises and most forms of travel. They also specialize in serving overseas missionaries.

AESU at http://www.aesu.com/ say they have been the experts in discount travel since 1977. Air fare from all major gateways. No need to be a student. They're available to everyone. Major airlines. No charters.

All Continents Travel at http://www.ptla.com/allcontinents/ says it is one of the founding members of the U.S. Air Consolidators Association. They say they are the West Coast's leading airline ticket consolidator. they say their paramount objective is to provide top value, competitive pricing and efficient services.

Travel Inside Turkey
Other Means of Transportation in Turkey
Getting from Istanbul's International Airport
There is an airport bus, Havas, but if you're unfamiliar with the city, it's best to have your hotel pick you up (ask them) or to arrange airport pick-up through a Local Travel Agent.

There are, of course, taxis. It's difficult to estimate cost, but as a rule the fare from the airport to Sultanahmet is around $20-$25. Check with the Tourist Information Office in the International Terminal for estimates and advice on the best transport to take based on the time of your arrival and budget.

Buses depart daily in August and there are three departures quaranteed per week in June, July, september and October.

Local Buses are very easy to use and are usually comfortable. Ulusoy, Varan (at http://www.varan.com.tr/index.html), Kamil Koc and Pumukkale are generally considered to be the top bus companies in Turkey. Ulusoy will be the most expensive while Varan and Kamil Koc are a bit cheaper. Pamukkale is usually the cheapest of the group.
But different bus companies cover different parts of the country, and for certain destinations, such as Cappadocia, none of the four offer service and you'll have to use a local carrier.
For long distance travel, most people take overnight buses. As a rule of thumb, tickets usually cost between $1.50 and $2 per hour of travel.
All buses are now smoke-free (except for the driver!)
The Turkish Embassy in Washington DC has a page with phone numbers for Ulusoy and Varan offices in Europe and inside Turkey. It's at http://turkey.org/groupg/coach.htm

TIP: When the bus makes a stop at their special centers, you will have to pay a small fee to use the rest room. They are usually clean. Don't despair when you see the Oriental style rest rooms. Walk to the end and you'll find one or two Western style toilets!
Below are some bus schedules for a few cities that will help you plan and budget your trip. Things do change so don't use these tables as exact. The exception is Varan, which offers departure times on their web site at
http://www.varan.com.tr/index.html. We also provide a brief description how to get from the bus station (otogar) to town.

kadikoy to otogar.

by serenagrimaldi

How easy is it to get from Kadikoy to the main bus station (Otogar) on the European side. I need to be there by 8am in the morning. Thankyou.

Re: kadikoy to otogar.

by Sirvictor

You must be an early bird. You must be on the road to Otogar at 5 am. The distance is huge and traffic is crowdy. It takes half an hour crossing the Bosphorus. You must go to Karakoy. and then take the tram or a taxi.
or go to the office in Kadiköy where you buyed the ticked and ask them if they have a shuttle to Otogar. Every bus company have an office at the pier /Quay of kadiköy. Ask them if they hava shuttle to Otogar.
good luck.

Re: kadikoy to otogar.

by serenagrimaldi

Thankyou for that info sirvictor, I had a feeling that it might be a bit of a problem to get to the Otogar from Kadikoy so early. Your information will enable me to book my accomodation accordingly so that I spend my last night in Istanbul on the 'other side'. Tessekur ederim.

That'a a good idea. Bir shey degil.

Travel Tips for Istanbul

Other worth to see places:...

by milge

Other worth to see places: Camlica, Pier Loti, Kumkapi, Kiz Kulesi, Rumeli and Anatolia Castles (there are two of them in the both sides of Istanbul and them both are worth to see)... And I'm sure there are more places waiting for you to find them out... (The place in the picture is called 'Kiz Kulesi' 'girl tower')

Marks of Vizanthia

by bugulma

In the old city you can easily find marks of the Vizanthia Empire (that was conquered by Ottomans in XV century. I don't say about Aya Sofya and other marked places for tourists but you can easily find columns just laying in the streets!

Gulhane

by solopes

If I had to choose a single point where everybody goes, becoming the merging points of all nationalities and cultures, I would choose Gulhane. The transport stop best serving Topkapi, Saint Sophie and the Blue mosque, this is a frenetic place, with a never ending rush of people coming and going, groups getting together, people seeking for orientation, and... touts, chasing their victims.

Rumeli Fortress

by 80-bettyboo

The Rumeli Fortress is the most imposing sight on the Bosphorus straights, dating back to the 15th century and buþt by Sultan Mehmet II prior to the conquest of Istanbul.
his aim was to block any possible sea support which might have come from the Black Sea to assist the flailing Byzantines.
IT finished after 4 months and 19 days.
Now it serves as a museum, displaying the canons that were used during the conquest. There is also an outdoor mini-amphi-theater used during the various music festivals in Istanbul. The walls and ramparts are still in excellent condition .
