Art Supply Store in Istanbul??? i need to find quality art supplies.
by portlanddave
hello all you great people out there,... if you are reading this and you know a store in Istanbul that sells Quality art supplies like paints and paper and brushes, please, please do let me know. I made a pretty serious search online and searched all the forums here, but came up empty handed. I did find one while asking around my neighborhood but they did not have much that i needed.
i am basically needing a very good ink, i use sumi ink, but i would buy indian ink if i could. and i paint on paper, quality white printmaking or watercolor paper. the paper and the ink are both very important to me.
if you want to see work i have recently done while in India, you can see it here:

as always, thank you all in advance, best to you,
dave

If you are unable to get specific recommendations, I remember seeing a lot of art dealers in the Sultanahmet district, in the area behind the Blue Mosque. I'm sure they could point in the right direction.

I found this site from an online search:
http://www.sanatmalzemeleri.com/index.php
(sanat=art malzeme=supply)
If you'll stay in Sultanahmet area, try to walk to Cagaoglu. There are big publishers, book stores and art supply stores in here. You can walk up to Ankara and Bab-i Ali Streets from Sirkeci. I think you can find something here. If not you can ask for what you want.
I hope I could help.

by Carlo-B.
The most interestng places are mostly concentrated in the area of the golden horn.
Visit Aya Sofia and the blue mosquee (Sultan Ahmed), visit the ancient cystern of yerebatan, the Hyppodrome of Constantin the great, the Gran Bazar. Visit the Topkapi palace. Enjoy the superb view on the city from the top of the ancient Galata tower. Take a bosphorus trip on a boat ad visit the summer palace in the asian part of the city. Take a long walk inside the whole bazar's area which extend frok the galata's bridge to the Hyppodrome. Visit also the Pera Palace, the ancient hotel where people traveling on the 'Orient Express' used to stay when they stopped in instanbul (Agatha Christie, for example).
Beaches of Istanbul
by Erkmen
Istanbul is surrounded with sea, but where do these people go for swimming.. :)
Unfortunately the sea water in the city center is not so clean. So people are going nearby places to swim during hot summer days..
Especially this year some private beaches has become popular.. You pay a cover charge at the entrance but the sea side is nice.. Beaches around kilyos area has some nice private beaches.. e.g. Solar Beach.. This summer many parties and open air entertainments are taking place at solar beach.
On the asian side "Sile and Agva" are the popular sites to go for swimming.. Both places are on the coastes of the black sea.. And nealy 1-1,5 hrs drive from the center.. One more alternatives are the Princess islands.. Although they are much more crowded in summer, they can still be an alternative to swim..(If you can find a place to lay yr towel:) )
Dress code in a mosque
by ophiro
Because the mosque is a holy place for the muslims you have to respect them and the place you enter.
dont go with short pants or undershirt.
if you will enter this way they will give you something to cover yourself or will prevent your entrance.
The Walls of Istanbul
by Paul2001
The walls that defended Istanbul, then known to the world as Constantinople. The walls were originally built in 447 A.D. by Emperor Theodosius II. They were reinforced many times over the next one thousand years. Over this millineum the 6km of walls held many besiegers at bay. The walls were finally breached by the Ottomans in 1453.
Today most of the walls are still standing however in various states of disrepair. As you can see here portions are being restored however you can walk throught the walls in some parts. If you want to walk around the walls, then it is not too difficult but I should suggest some care be taken. The walls extend around some rather depressed parts of Istanbul. Single women might not feel comfortable. The walls are also being encroached by a highway so your tour may not be all that peaceful.
You can buy everything
by mirchica about grand bazaar
It's a huge bazar and it's covered. There are a lot of streets full with jewelry shops, clothes, gifts, souvenires, etc. All the retailers stand outside and invite the costumers to buy.Whe you deside to buy something and ask for the price they always tell you higher price. And you'll offend them if you don't bargain for the price. For example we wanted to buy 2 cups for tea with plates and spoons. He said 16 lira,I said 8 and finally we met at 11 lira. But I'm not good in it.If you're better you'll get better price. You should buy a blue eye, called "nazar"(if I remember correctly). It is a symbol for health and happieness.
