Hotel in sultanahmet or taksim?

by kiko76

Hi,
I'm planning for the first time visit in Istanbul with my girlfriend and I would like to know if is it better to search accommodation in sultanahmet or taksim.
I want to include sightseeing of all the historical "must-see" places but also to find good restaurants, not on the most expensive side.
Thanks

Sultanahmet is the historical center. That's where you should stay if you want to see the sites that Istanbul is famous for.

hello,

it depends on you,but it will better if you will find a place around sultanahmet so that the distances between ''must see'' type of places (museum, bazars etc...) to our hotel will be so close to you.You can also take a tram to come to ''Kabatas'' region of Istanbul very easily from Sultanahmet as well.

Agree that Sultanhemet is the spot for tourists.

Couple of hotels that I can recommend:
Budget: Hotel Hali - www.halihotel.com (Seems to have been renovated)

Medium Range: Hotel Accura -
http://www.turkishhospitality.com/accura_hotel_istanbul.htm
( Is now advertising in Japanese for some reason)

Full details on my Turkey pages.

Definitely stay in Sultanahmet. The Blue Mosqu, Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern, Topkapi Palace, the Grand Bazaar, the Beyazit Mosque, the Archaeological Museum and the Islamic Arts Museum will all be within a 10 minute walk of your hotel. Feel free to visit our Istanbul page here on VT for ideas regarding things to see in the city.

We were staying close to Sultanahmet (see my VT tips)and had no problem walking or taking tram to Taksim for dinners.
Tram is very easy to use.
I would just look for the "perfect hotel"

Definitely stay in Sultanahmet. We researched heaps for our trip and the No. 1 best small hotel is Hotel Sari Konak in Sultanahmet. Family-run, very friendly and helpful, lovely clean rooms, but the best bit was overlooking the Blue Mosque. Their rooftop restaurant is almost within hands-touch of the Mosque. All the main attractions are in walking distance from here. You absolutely cannot beat this excellent, value-for-money intimate hotel in a top location. You can check it out on www.tripadvisor.com. Have a great time, its a beautiful city with so much to see - we had 5 days and it wasn't enough!

Hi.

For sightseeing and good price better to choose Sultanhamet.

Technical Univercity of Istanbul

by Erkmen

It all started over here, When I first came to this building to register, I was shocked.. Taskisla was not renovated those times, but the nice garden, the Classes, the Amphis were so nice.. The flowers, the small pool and the Girls...

Yes we were in the same building with all those nice girls who were in the Faculty of Architects.... But it dont lasted for soo long..

The new building of Naval Architecture was opened in the first year and we were to move to another building, where there were only 6 girls for 200 hungry men...:)))

A few steps from Galata...

by matza

A few steps from Galata bridge!! Smoke billowed from a skiff tied to the wharf, and I caught the aroma of fresh fish cooking over live coals. Beefy mustachioed men in black vests with yellow embroidery were doing a brisk business stuffing grilled mackerel fillets into lengths of fresh crusty bread, along with chunks of raw sweet onion and a squeeze of lemon. I paid my 1,000,000 liras (about a 0.70 dollar) and sat on the plaza steps amid the hubbub, the afternoon sunlight bathing the scene in soft amber light, savoring one of the most delicious sandwiches I have ever tasted.

The Grand Bazaar

by ophiro about The Grand Bazaar

The grand bazaar is a very big covered bazaar with many streets inside and a lot of stores.
You can find here shirts , jewelery , lamps , leather , music instruments , carpets and many more.
When you want to buy something bargain for the price it is a known custom in Turkey. you can find jewelery , clothes , leather , antiques and many many more. Depends on what you want to buy - they also accept Euro , USD and of course YTL.
