Balloon

by papadave

Hi Friends

Can anyone tell me if the tethered balloon is still operating in Kadikoy on the Asian side. Any other infomation is also welcome on attractions on the Asian side

Re: Balloon

by muratkorman

Recently the weather conditions are quite bad in Istanbul. I don't think the balloon is operational during winter. In Asian side, with these weather conditions, the potential attractions are shopping malls, dining, Bagdat Street, Moda and Sahil Yolu (Beach Road). I would suggest a visit to Prince Islands, but you would feel very cold. You can check my Istanbul page for some restaurant suggestions.

Travel Tips for Istanbul

Sultan Ahmet Mosque

by bugulma

Sultan Ahmet Mosque (known as Blue Mosque as well) is situated in the center of the city, opposite Aya Sofya. The mosque was built in 1609-1616 by Sultan Ahmet I. I read in books that he became Sultan in 19 years and built the mosque that to eulogize God.

Ayasofya, Orthodox mosaic

by bugulma

Since 1935 Ayasofya is a museum. Many Orthodox mosaics of Ix-X centuries were cleaned from plasters. Now you can enjoy it for TYL 10 (EUR 5). In the same time inside there are Muslim symbols and it is one of the place where you can see signs of the different religions. Some views of Interior are in the travelogue.

Fishing

by Martin_S.

Being from California I am used to seeing fishermen at every pier, wharf and beach, not to mention boats....but here in Istanbul they take it to new heights. The Galata Bridge, spanning the Golden Horn between Galata Tower and the Topkapi Palace seems to be the most popular place. Just take a look at the photo, "wall to wall" fishhooks and poles"...if you enjoy fishing do take along your pole on your visit to Istanbul.

Terrace at the Four Seasons

by terrycowan

No one I know can really afford to stay at the Four Seasons Hotel in Sultanahmet. But, what you can do is have drinks on the rooftop terrace. Its a great place to unwind at the end of the day. Kick back, have an Efes or a raki, relax, listen to the seagulls and enjoy the view of the Blue Mosque, the Aya Sofya and the Bosphorus.

Bosphorous Sea.

Bostanci Basi Bridge: It is situated on the Bagdat Street in Bostanci. It was built out of cut stone in the name of Mahmud II between 1523 and 1524.

Buyukcekmece Bridge: Built by Architect Sinan between 1564 and 1568, it is a unique work of art formed of 4 separate bridges and have 7, 7.5 and 9 trusses. Kapýagasý (Haramidere) Bridge: It is built over Haramidere creek between Kucuk Cekmece and Buyuk Cekmece lakes. It is one of Sinan's works built in the l6th century. It has two large and one small trusses. It has lost its originality in consequence of repairs.

Silivri Bridges: Architect Sinan has built two stone bridges in Silivri (1568), one of them is 48.5 m long, has three trusses and is located at the point of entry to Silivri, the other one is over the Silivri Stream and has 32 trusses with low round arch. After repair, it lost its originality.
