    Depressing!

    by

During my stay at Riva Hotel Istanbul I can summarize it as the followings:

    Pros:
Great location it's close to many attraction and landmarks such as Istiklal Street, Taksim Square and Golden Horn.
    room service
Bellboys were helpful even with really bad English.
    Cons:
Very old, unmaintained and depressing hotel! I've never seen such a dull lobby, it's very small and dark.
The receptionist was rude, unhelpful and unfriendly!
As for the room its around 6 square meters in total, very basic , small non comfy bed, the bathroom was tiny with Plumbing problems, I had trouble flushing the toilet, There's no bath tub only a shower
The serious problem in my opinion was the very bad sound isolation, we can hear the daily life of the people at the adjunct room and the same with them so it was very embarrassing.
The breakfast during my stay was all about water Melon, every morning I find nothing but water melon and tasteless orange juice/tang!!!
I'll never consider that hotel ever again even for the location!

    Unique Quality: LOCATION

Hey Mike...d:o)
Being a Reggae fan, I know about Riddim in Istanbul. I have not been personally, but a Jamaican rasta friend of mine has been there and was treated quite well by the (owner or manager, - not sure), from Sudan, a DJ something, whom he said was a righteous rasta.

I know that if I make it back to Istanbul, it would be on my list of places to make an appearance. Have fun. One love mon!

Travel Tips for Istanbul

Getting to Haydarpassa

by albaaust

We found this out too late after a hair-raising experience with a taxi driver backing DOWN a busy freeway and huge traffic jams. And…it cost us a whopping 60YTL!!sIf you are catching the train from Haydarpasa and staying in Sultanahmet the quickest, cheapest and safest way to get there is to catch the ferry to Kadikoy which is where the train leaves.

ISTANBUL

I’m drawing an Istanbul on my chest

With my thumb, in the shape of a butterfly;

In front of the mirror like a child

I’m stroking my face and my hair.

Any bit of sea from Kadiköy

A half-empty tram from Þiþli

From samatya, perhaps From Sultanahmet,

I remember fig trees.

I’m drawing an istanbul on my chest

With my thumb, in the shape of a butterfly,

I haven’t much hope, I’m a bit tired,

I like my eyes best.

When you enter the mosque, you will be expected to take your shoes off and put on some slippers. If you are a woman, I suggest you wear something not too sexy or suggestive, unless you just love to be stared at.

Kerpe,Kefken and surrounds.

by Tdiver

2 hours more or less, or 150 km away from Istanbul on the black sea coast, is this fairly secluded, quiet, and relatively unspoilt part.Water is great for swimming and lots of unspoilt bays for picnics and relaxing.Head towards Izmit, turn off for Kandira and keep going north.Kerpe is relaxed to Istanbuls' crazy.Just a bit further up the coast to the east is Kefken, red cliff/rocks, great at sunset.

Yeni Valide Mosque

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

The Yeni Valide Mosque is located in the Üsküdar district. It was built on Ýskele road by Gülnuþ Emetullah Sultan, mother of the Ottoman sultan Ahmed III between the 1708 and 1710. Main construction have square shape and is covered with one flattened and four half domes. The mosque has got two minarets with two balconies each. Calligraphies inside the mosque are the work of Hezarfen Mehmet Efendi.

You may watch my high resolution photo of Istanbul on the Google Earth according to the following coordinates 41° 1' 29.50" N 29° 0' 53.34" E or on my Google Earth Panoramio Yeni Valide Mosque.
