Sunny Skies?

by Donna_in_India

Hi - can travel to Istanbul from mid-April to 1st week of May. Not too concerned with the actual temperatures but would like some sunny skies. Is that possible in mid-April? Thanks....

Re: Sunny Skies?

by ozalp

It is quite possible. Actually, yesterday (15th of March) was a bright day. It was cold but the sun was shining.

Emirgan forest is located in the northern part of Bosphorus.

The forest is huge and relaxing .

The Emirgan forest host two historic resorts called Sari Kosk and Pembe Kosk where you can enjoy the garden and the forest whilst you are having your cake and teas in Ottoman style..

The eye of Medusa also called the Evil eye

by hekate

If you are going to the Istanbul bazaars it is almost inevitable to come across the Eye of Medusa also called the Evil eye. I guess it is one of the most popular souvenirs you could buy in Turkey :)

I am writing this tip in case some of you do not know the meaning of the Eye.

So I guess most of you are familiar with the Greek myth about Medusa :) The one whose hair is snakes and whose blue eyes you must not look into. As you know the myth says that if you look into her eyes you will turn into stone.

The meaning of the Eye of Medusa talisman is that if one looks upon it with evil in one's heart, the evil will be returned upon oneself. So, basically if you are superstitious you are supposed to believe that it will protect you from evil thoughts and spells :)))

Football Fever!!!

by iaint

Take in a Fenerbahce game. We went to the 1st home league game of 06/07 season. Tickets about 100YTL for good seats (on touchline, not behind goal).

Not like anywhere else I've been!

To start, kick off was 9.30pm on a Saturday. Still 30 degrees in August. Atmosphere was electric.

Ref sent off a home player after 30 mins, and home fans went crazy...water cartons thrown onto pitch at linesman, riot police onto pitch at the double.

FB eventually won 6-0, so everyone went home happy. We took midnight ferry home. Get fan gear in shop at stadium. Tickets available there too

You'll be searched twice going in - no water bottles allowed, but you can buy stuff to eat and drink inside stadium.

Watch out for armoured water cannon outside main entrance!

St. Antoine Catholic Church

by H-TownJourneyman

As we were walking down Istiklal Caddesi, we were actually looking for a particular restaurant when, just one block away from the busy avenue, we stumbled upon this beautiful Catholic church. The Church of St. Antoine actually has a long history here in Istanbul, as it was founded in 1725, primarily for foreigners. This present structure was built in 1913, and is made of lovely red brick. It is located just off of Istiklal Caddesi, in Taksim.

Turkish movie DVDs

by AlperIst about All movie and bookshops

They are available in many movie and bookshops, all with English subtitles.

I support Tuna's list, plus adding ALL movies from Nuri Bilge Ceylan (especially Uzak and Iklimler) and Zeki Demirkubuz (especially Masumiyet and Kader).
