Excellent Stay in a Fantastic City

by TripAdvisor Member Laura96

Sofa Hotel was very elegant and the service was excellent. It was one of the best hotel I've ever stayed. My friend and I were impressed with the quality of this hotel. The staff was very friendly. The location was perfect to walk to many restaurants and shops. I would recommend this hotel to everyone visiting Istanbul. This city rocks !! Sofa Hotel made my experience even better. This was my dream vacation. I'll definitely go back next summer.

Butterfly Valley

by Erkmen

A Valley or a small paradise.. At the shores of Aegean sea, close to Oludeniz..

A place where there is No road, No car, No pollution, No noise and No electricity.. Definitely a must see for nature lovers..

There are daily tours by boat to the valley from oludeniz, but I suggest you to stay one or two nights at the valley.. In a tent or in a sofa you may spend one of the nicest nights of your life.. And enjoy the thousands of butterflies surronding you while you climb the wonderful waterfall..

For more pictures of Butterfly valley, you can visit my Butterfly valley traveloque..

When you are in Fethiye, take a minibus to Oludeniz and there is a boat leaving to valley at 10 in the morning.. You can also visit there by private boat tours..

Excellent hotel, Minor improvements needed

by TripAdvisor Member Bulgarian_travels

My husband and I, together with my in-laws and our 2 month old, spent a weekend in the Sofa hotel.
I booked it for the modern, clean-cut design, as well as the location.
The hotel is situated near Taksim Square, it was a little bit hard for us to find, so we actually had to hire a taxi and follow him all the way to the hotel (we had our own car). The street, where the hotel is located, is somewhat narrow, but it was surprisingly busy (maybe because it was Friday night) when we arrived. We Valet-parked, but our parking spot was esentially the curbside of the street. We got to keep our keys and get to our car whenever we liked, so esentially this was more paid street parking (25 YTL per day), than anything "valet". We paid the valet guys directly (their request), which makes me think the hotel sees nothing of these "charges", but this is little of concern for me. Just wanna warn others in case they do care.
Check-in was extremely slow, normally I am very patient, but we were pretty tired (drove 6 hrs in our car) with a hungry baby, and 15 min check-in time was a little too much. I need to mention we were the only people at the front desk.
Hotel exterior is excellent - very nicely decorated, exactly as the hotel website portrays it, I was not disappointed. Our room was on the small side, but still very nice. Check out my pictures for better idea. Room service was reasonably priced, however we did not have a chance to order in - what I find great is that the full menu was available 24hours, something i have not yet seen anywhere.
All in all, staff that we came across were nice and polite, no major complaint except for the slow check-in.
I gave the hotel 4 star rating for two reasons
- my in-laws were moved from one room into another room without their knowledge. By "moved" I mean, their luggage was picked up and moved into another room in their absense.
- we were asked to move at 11pm, supposedly because there was some water leaking from our bathroom. I guess we were not "moved" because we had too much stuff spread all over the room...As I mentioned, we were travelling with a small baby and it was too much of a hassle to change rooms, especially considering that we were checking out the next morning.
- finally, I went to take a shower, and with no forewarning whatsoever, the water stopped (I barely could wash the soap off myself). Front desk informed us that they deliberately stopped it in order to figure out where the leakage was coming from.
Accidents happen, however, the hotel staff should have made an effort to warn its guests before leaving them with no water for over an hour.
I still gave the hotel 4 stars, because I believe we simply had a little bad luck. Service is not what it should be, but other than this, the hotel is a good choice. I loved the location as well, as I wanted to be away from the touristy areas.
If travelling by car/taxi, bear in mind that there is a lot of traffic in Istanbul. The hotel is about 30/40min from Sultanhamet where Aya Sophia/Blue Mosque are located.

Wonderful!!! Highly recommended!!!

My husband and I stayed three nights at the sofa hotel and residences for our honeymoon. We went to Istanbul last year and stayed at the Barin Hotel (3 stars) so this time, we wanted to try a better hotel in a new location. SOOOO glad that we did!!! The sofa is awesome!! The location is very modern, hype and animated. You have a lot of nice stores and restaurants around and it's vey safe to walk at night (even very late!). We arrived at the sofa early in the morning (7 am) so our room wasn't ready. So the staff at the reception offered us tea and coffee and were very nice. We told them we'll walk around till our double standard room was ready. One hour later we came back and had a very pleasant surprise: they told us that we were upgraded to a tranquility suite because we were on our honeymoon!!! The room was huge, the bathroom was very very nice with a rain shower, l'occitane bath products and even the paper had our name on them! Our DVD didn't work so we pushed the "24 Hour anything anytime" button and the sent us a technicien at 10 pm. He told us that the DVD didn't work with our TV and that he will change the TV the day after. He probably didn't do it because we tried the dat after and the DVD still did not work, but we didn't feel like calling again so we just watched TV. Maybe the only thing that was not perfect was that the TV didn't have many TV stations and none in french. But overall, we were very pleased with the suite, so we thanked the manager who was very nice and gave us advice on good jazz places (we wanted to go check out good music). This hotel also offered us a bottle of wine and a basket of fruits as a welcome in our suite :)! We highly recommend this hotel , if you want to make your stay in the beautiful city of Istanbul unforgettable!

Turkish inhospitality in a dreary hotel

by TripAdvisor Member wistyone

We stayed in this hotel for three nights in May. The Sofa , located in an upscale shopping district with mostly name brand stores, is a feeble attempt to be urban and hip. In fact, it's dark and dreary, miserably managed and horribly overpriced. Unlike other Turkish hotels, service is inattentive and lethargic, and staff very poorly informed. Any query is viewed as an incovenience.
Surprisingly, for a "cosmopolitan" hotel, English language skills are exceptionally limited.

Turkish breakfasts are generally included in the room cost. The Sofa does offer a great buffet breakfast, the one plus, but beware, unlike us, most guest had to pay for it.

Book the Sofa at your own risk.

Superb Hotel and Location

by TripAdvisor Member Zafivar

The Sofa is in my opinion an excellent hotel conveniently located at a lively, 'high-end', part of Istanbul on the European side.

As a business traveler, I have stayed at the Sofa many times and given the boutique nature of the hotel, there is more of a 'family atmosphere' that massive 5 star hotels may naturally lack.

I have been impressed how the staff remembered that I like tea during breakfast and they took the initiative to provide me with tea every time they saw me again at breakfast without me ordering it... I think this is a simple nice example of the extra attention you may get at Sofa.

Overall, I would highly recommend Sofa as an excellent choice of stay in Istanbul.

Fantastic Choice in Istanbul

by TripAdvisor Member IAD777

My wife and I stayed here on holiday in December 2007. We did a lot of research about Istanbul hotels, and in the end, were deciding between the Ritz Carlton and the Sofa. We are really glad we chose the Sofa for several reasons.

If you like modern interesting hotels, this is the place for you. It is luxurious but very quirky and interesting. Great bathrooms, excellent beds and really good food.

Also the location is really excellent, right in the heart of Nisantasi, which is Istanbul's prime shopping/ dining district. It's a bit further from some of the tourist sites, including Sultanhamet, but we actually liked being in a part of the city that seemed more catered to locals who are going out to bars, restaurants, shops and galleries, rather than to tourists.

One note. The "concierge" while really nice, wasn't really a concierge. So you have to do a lot of research on your own about Istanbul. If you usually rely on hotel recommendations for things to do, and to double check when things open and close etc, this may not be the place for you.

However, the hotel did provide two amazing restaurant recommendations--our favorite was Komsu, which is about 3 blocks from the hotel. The other excellent meal we had was at Tika, also a block away.

We saw the Ritz, which was quite luxurious. But, it is really just a standard Ritz, and its slightly secluded down the side of the hill, whereas the Sofa is right smack in the middle of a vibrant neighborhood.

All in all, I'd highly recommend this hotel.

Cappadocia Region

by rickeyru

We will be flying from Istanbul to to the Cappadocia region via Kayseri in late May. Is the airport in Kayseri far from town and do we need transportation? We will need a hotel or similar accommodations there what is the best area in the Cappadocia region to stay? We will also like to tour the area for a few days is it best to rent a car or take tours.
Thanks
rick

Re: Cappadocia Region

Goreme and Uchisar they a are both nice with Goreme being the main touristy hub.Lots of tours available and they come with guides and lunch usually.Lots of places to stay. One built into the rocks is the more popular but mormal hotel buildings around the main street.

Hello Rick ,check out my pages for Cappadocia :))

what about a VT meeting while your here ?

enjoy your holiday :)

Re: Cappadocia Region

by profannie

I went several times to Cappadocia and the place I prefer to stay is Uchisar, because of the lovely views and the peace (you really don't feel being in a touristic area).
Finding an accomodation there (or in Goreme or Urgup) is really easy: there are pensions and hotels to all kind of budgets (from cheap to luxurious).
Kayseri is about 45min-1h driving from the center of Cappadocia.
Ask the hotel or pension owner for transfert: he will be able to arrange something for you for a reasonnable price.
I always rented a car for going in Cappadocia, but a tour may be a good option too. It depends on you. I find that having a car allows me to go where I want and as long as I want. Driving in Cappadocia is very easy. You just have to beware of the big turtles that are sometimes crossing the road... :-)

I've seen some posts of individuals renting their room or studio or apartments on a monthly basis at the Turkey pages of expatriates.com

There are students there too who wants to share their flats...Check it out, you might find what you're looking for there.

Have fun!

Hi friend,
I have a full furnished flat at Taksim just like u desire and it only takes 3min. to Istiklal street/Taksim st. on foot. I searched for the place of Tomer(probably u will take Turkish courses there:)) and it took 7min
My home is small but up to 4people can live there in comfort. I have a twin bed and a wide sofa. If u be my guest, I am planning to sleep on sofa and give u my bed. I have wireless internet connection, phone, tv and dvd player. I am working at a bank and I go out at 8.30am and turn back home at 7pm so home is empty most of the time.

If u wish to contact me for details, I would be very pleased. I can show u my home on webcam. Come and be my guests dear friend.

Ancona/Brindisi ferry to Cesme

by dathrilla

Hi,
As the title suggests, I've decided to take a ferry to Cesme from either Ancona or Brindisi. I have encountered a couple different ferrylines, but to be honest, i'm still pretty clueless on the different ferries and seats. HAving seen the expensive prices for cabins, I wanted to know if it is possible to stay in the car or on the deck during the travel. Can anyone help me out on this enquiry? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Ancona/Brindisi ferry to Cesme

by ozhanu

Hi,
I am sure that you are NOT allowed to sit in the car during the journer. On April I took the ferry from Venice (italy) to Igumeitsa (Greece) cabins are quite expensive so i bought the deck. Thet means that you have to find yourself a place in the deck (open air) during the journey including at night. However it was 1st of April and on the open sea it was quite cold. I went in and find my self a place in the cafee and slept there on a sofa in my sleepin bag. That is quite OK if you are single. However, if you have a family (wife, childeren) it wont be good thou.
hope this helps
