This is not necessarily THE best hotel in Istanbul BUT I think you would be hard pushed to find one that is better located!
The rooms are clean. Our family room was small but adequate for the 4 of us. The breakfast terrace has wonderful views of the Blue Mosque and surrounding area.
Staff at the front desk are friendly and you can pay by credit card.
Unique Quality: Lovely views from the terrace.
Directions: on the tram line opposite Sultanahmet park/Blue mosque
I stayed at Star Holiday Hotel, Sultanahmet, Istanbul. To me, this is the best budget hotel to stay in Istanbul. I paid 18 euros per nite (Nov 2008) plus breakfast for 3 people (dorm for 3). Breakfast is okey – bread with butter, chocolate and jam, hard boiled egg, fruits, salad, coffee and juice. Even though it’s a budget hotel, but the decoration looks like a mid range hotel. They have a nice lobby with a big TV for guests to relax. The staffs are great – Altin, Yassin, Thamar, they answered all yr questions with smiles. Internet is free for guests. They also let me use the staff’s kitchen, so I cooked everyday when I stayed there. Location was perfect. It’s only about 50 meters from the Blue Mosque, 80 meters from Aya Sofiya and Palace Cistern. A cheap grocery store is about 10 minutes walk from the hotel. The tram stop is about 3 minutes walk. I will definitely come back !!!
Directions: From Eminonu pier, take tram to Sultanahmet. Exit right at the stop. The hotel is only 50 meters away (next to a restaurant).
Does anybody have any experience with the following hotels? I am planning a trip to istanbul at the end of August, and want to get a clean hotel in safe neighborhood.

Side hotel in Sultanahmet
Anadolu hotel in Sultanahmet
Star Holiday hotel in Sultanahmet
Atlantis hotel in Sultanahmet
Just returned from turkey and stayed at Side hotel. Excellent location and clean. Walking distance to grand bazaar, blue mosque and Saint Sophia. Around $60.00 Euro/night. We stayed there 5 nights and were very pleased. It is just a small hotel, Very safe area.
thanks for your responce.
i hope $60 night was not for a single room. :)
