I'm a little unsure on the route I should follow after leaving Istanbul? My options are:
1) taking a bus to Iznik, then Bursa (as I've heard it's a scenic ride, and not so lengthy - Is it really true it's a scenic ride?
2) ferry to Bandirma, and bus connection to Cannakale, or direct bus connection to Cannakale (from Istanbul) - only reason I could think for doing this is getting to Aegean sea - nearby to turkish islands Gökçeada, and bozcaada, but after looking at pictures of these islands online, and the mountain Kazdagi, I'm not TOO impressed with the landscape scenery, and breathing photography near Cannakale (which is what I'm looking for). Also, I am no so interested in history, or archealogy, so I hope that helps you suggect a route connecting Istanbul to Izmir, taking the most beautiful natural, and architectural attractions along the way.

you could also take the ferry from istanbul to yalova and then grab a bus to izmir from there.
that way you will sail across the marmara sea on your way to izmir.
i did the trip once and it was very nice.
I know about that, but I'm looking for stops along the way, not a direct Istanbul-Izmir run, at this point I'm considering Istanbul-Iznik, then Bursa, then Balikesir, then Ayvalik, before headind fown the Aegean coast to Izmir
Once you get off of the road that runs between Yalova and Bursa, the coastal road that goes along the lake to Iznik in my opinion is nice. The rest of the road between Yalova and Bursa is nothing special compared to the roads you've already traveled in Turkey.
Is your question that you will be going from Istanbul over the bridge and around the Marmaras, then down to Yalova before heading to Iznik? Or would you be taking the ferry to Yalova, then to Iznik? The bus ride around is nice, but in my humble opinion not worthy of the couple extra hours. The ferry (particularly near sunrise/sunset) is better.

area too on my upcoming trip (see forwarded post below)
and just want to know where I should go to when I'm
down there for the best scenery and local culture
(I'm not into archeology/ architectural sites either)

Hi,
I will be travelling to Istanbul November 21-30 for the first time
(very excited :)!) and want to go on a excursion to Avylik from Istanbul
on November 25-26 by taking the high-speed ferry to Bandirma then renting
a car there and drive to Avylik ..
How often does the ferry goes to Bandirma from Istanbul and is there any issue that I need to be aware of with my itirenary?

Sorry, I'm unfamiliar with Avylik, so can't give you any advise between Bandirma and there.
But the Istanbul ferry leaves Yenikapi terminal twice per day about 12 hours apart from each other. I believe it is 6:30am & 6:30pm. There's an additional noon ferry on Friday.
Actually there is no scenery until Ayvalik.
So you drive through Balikesir to Ayvalık.
While in Ayvalik you should visit the Cunda
island(actually a peninsula) and have lunch .
Hope you have luck and a good weather..
Then to Izmir is 160 km.Mostly along the sea.
visit the Hagia Sophia. Also, right across the street is the Underground Cistern, which is a mysterious, 'Phantom of the Opera' type place! I miss Lahmacun (the food).Yum, yum, Lahmacun. It's like a taco, but full of fresh greens and with a squirt of lemon, ohh-ohh!! The water, with all the ships going to and fro!
And I miss the water, all the boats going to and fro. The whole city is dependent on the Bosphorus!
Istanbul is changing with its new and nice parks.. You can find them all around the city..
The main parks are as follows..
Gulhane Park: Located in the touristy peninsula. This old park has been renovated newly and have a nice environment..
Yildiz Park: Located between Besiktas and Ortakoy.. Has a wonderful landscape.. Looking to bosphorus up above.. You need to climb up the hill near Ciragan palace..
Parkorman: A park inside the forest.. With the help of the private organizations this park has become the most popular place in Istanbul.. The park also hosts many live concerts and open air show..
Ozgurluk parki: Freedom park on the Asian side of Istanbul.. All the main activities and events of Asian side of Istanbul is taking place in this park.. Live concerts, Exhibitions, Fairs and etc.. The park also has several alternatives for kids to be entertained ..
Simit is a semi-tough bread that is in the shape of a ring, and covered with sesame seeds. As you walk the streets of Istanbul, you will see it being sold all over by vendors. Most of the vendors sell it out of little carts or stands, but some even have a stack of it on top of their heads! Wherever they have it, make sure you pick some up! It is a great snack to have while strolling through the city!

The Grand Bazaar is a great place to visit and it is a must do if you are visiting Istanbul, but if you cannot handle the pressure of the men trying to sell you stuff then stay away ,if they spot that you talk another language from turkish then they are on to you. And will follow you half way down the corridor untill you shrugg them off it is a brilliant place to visit though.
You can buy almost everything here, and you can manage to get some good deals and you can also be ripped off by the local tradesmen. It can help if you can talk fluent Turkish to haggle with them but most of them talk broken English. It may also help to have a Turkish friend with you so that they can haggle to get that special item you really want.
