Whirling Dervish Show

by easlanis

I am going to instanbul on July and I would like to watch a Whirling Dervish Show. Where should I go? Can I go by myself or I have to book to an agent?

I was interested in your question having visited Istanbul a few times but never witnessed a whirling.
Did you read this web? http://www.turkeytravelplanner.com/go/Istanbul/Sights/Beyoglu/mevlevi_program.html
I trust that it is up to date and in July it is possible.

Mevlevi dervishes perform the whirling sema ceremony with traditional orchestra at Istanbul's Galata Mevlevihanesi (a dervish tekke, or hall) in Beyoglu every Sunday afternoon, and some Saturday afternoons, all year.

This seems to be the best place to search for a chance to see the dervishes. The location of the building is:
15 Galip Dede Caddesi Şahkulu, İstanbul, Turkey

If you open Google Maps - satellite - you will be able to see where this hall is located in Istanbul. Also you can plot your own walking directions if coming from a nearby address. Or tram.

Pity some letters of International languages cannot be recognised on VT.
The alternative address for Google Maps is:
15 Galip Dede Caddesi Sahkulu, Istanbul, Turkey

Hi - if you're in the Sultanahmet area, just walk along the main street and you'll see offers for 3 different shows including the one already mentioned. I know at least one of them is nightly. Sorry I don't have more specific details. Enjoy!

Smell of the dream
Dead tired...

by evliyasems

Smell of the dream
Dead tired Hodja came home and thought:
~ Suppose that I have delighted soup here, now... And say that I add a little bit red peppery fresh butter to the surface of the soup... And say that I eat spoonfuls out of the soup dish...
While Hodja was thinking the soup, the door was knocked. Hodja opened the door and a neighbour son appeared with an empty bowl.
- What is that, Child? asked Hodja
- Please Hodja, my mother is very ill. Could you give us some soup?
Hodja was confused and terrified. When he send the boy back he thought again:
~ Neigbours!, They are smelling even your dreams. AYASOFIA MOSQUE

Be Friendly

by scottblank10

The peoplein Istanbul are probably the most friendly people i have yet to meet. Maybe because i was traveling alone and had long blonde hair, but everyone wanted to be my friend. And then there were the people who just wanted your money. Be aware and cautious of people who are being friendly just to sell you something or steal your bag, but be reindly as well. I met some great people.

Packing List

by TerryP

Comfortable shoes, always.
There is alot to see in this big city. Take lots of film but beware if you are using a regular 35mm for inside the Blue Mosque or St. Sophia, your pictures won't come out. There is no where near enough lighting.

Kiosks

by SirRichard

Istanbul must be the only city I know where they use ancient buildings and monuments to house tobacco and candies kiosks. Some of them are real artworks, as part of former palaces, and official buildings. They are sometimes included in city guides too…

Where to buy the Turkish Coffee

by Erkmen about Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi

"Dont forget to bring Turkish Coffee for me".. Before leaving your home country, some of your friends would ask you to bring Turkish coffee for them.. Or may be you would like to carry some to your home..

So where to buy the best Turkish coffee..

"Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi" is known to be the best Turkish cofee dealer operating for more than 130 years.. It has several shops around Istanbul and one in the Toursity area..

Just go in to the Spice market from the gate on the eminonu side.. Walk inside the spice market, then you will come to a cross and turn right.. You will come to another gate of the spice market.. Leave the market and just very close to the door you will see the shop of this famous Turkish Coffe shop.. Turkish coffee .. :) Coffee is packaged in 100 gr, 250 gr and 500 grams boxes..
