Great B&B in Sultanahmet

Best (5.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on January 1, 2008

The Terrace Guesthouse was a great B&B located in Sultanahmet just three blocks from the Blue Mosque and the Aya Sofiyah. The location cannot be beat and is located adjacent to the Four Seasons Hotel. The B&B is located in a four story building with a commanding view of Istanbul's waterfront and both the Blue Mosque and Aya Sofiyah from the breakfast room and patio located on the top floor. The place has an authentic feel and is not particularly fancy but very comfortable and welcoming. They have wireless internet access, however, the rooms do not have televisions (at least mine did not). It does not feel like a hotel though and you can make yourself comfortable hanging out in the lobby and watching the communal TV or set up shop on the top floor in the kitchen room or patio which must have one of the best views in Sultanahmet. The rooms have small refrigerators and very comfortable beds. Some of the rooms have balconies.

Unique Quality: The "breakfast room lady" does not speak a word of English but it very nice and will make sure you get a good meal. Breakfast consists of hard boiled eggs, cheese, cucumbers, olives, cheese, breads, jams, juice, and coffee of your choice. If you have something extra or special and you can communicate your requirements she will accomodate you. TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN: We visited with our 2 year old son and seven year old daughter who can both be a handful. The entire staff was welcoming to them, the breakfast lady figured out what they like to eat and made it for them and they even bought small gifts for both of our kids. The hotel also doubles as a carpet store and the manager/owner is very knowledgeable about Turkish carpets. The prices are marked on the carpets and are fairly reasonable and probably could be further negotiated. There was no pressure to buy any carpets, however, they are hanging all over the house including in the rooms.

Real Turkish atmosphere

Best (5.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on September 2, 2006

Very friendly place, good rooms and good breakfasts. Definitely recommended. I've stayed here 3 times now, so that says it all!

Its in Sultanahmet, only 5 minutes walk to Topkapi, Ayia Sofia and Blue Mosque. Plenty of restaurants close by.

You're only 5 minutes walk from the tramway, which will take you to Sirkeci railway station and the ferry terminals for the Asian side, Bosphorus trips etc. Its also just off the main road into the city centre from the airport, so outside of rush hours, the trip is quick and easy. They'll organise a mini bus to collect you or drop you off.

UPDATE 1 August 08

Hotel now has FREE wireless in the rooms. Superb! Using it to do this update!

Unique Quality: 2 very special characteristics. First the view from the rooftop breakfast room - Sea of Marmara, Bosphorus and Golden Horn to front; Ayia Sophia and Blue Mosque to the sides! You could just sit there all morning taking it all in...

Second, the owner also has a big stock of carpets for sale. They decorate the walls everywhere, and are piled high at reception. Really makes the atmosphere genuine Turkish.
