Visit the Blue Mosque and St....
by TerryP
Visit the Blue Mosque and St. Sophia. These are two of the most beautiful buildings. We visited Istanbul by cruise ship and I would have to say this was one of the most fascinating ports. I liked just watching the city from the ship. You can't beat the view of the city as you pull in to this busy port. This picture shows the Blue Mosque on the left and St. Sophia om the right.
Ortaköy
by Bregman
Ortaköy is one of the most fun places in Istanbul. It's often overlooked by tourists, being a little further away from the more famous sites. The best way to get here is by ferry. Here you will find a variety of restaurants, cafés, clubs, an open food market and more. You should come here at least twice, once during the day and then again at night.
Raki
by ophiro
Raki , also known as the lion's milk , is the traditional drink in Turkey .
The taste of Raki is very close to the taste of Arak.
Raki is a clear beverage that is made from grapes.
We got Raki while sitting in a restaurant called Beyaz Balina and it was very good.
The raki is a very strong beverage with more than 40% alcohol so beware ! - i saw a woman that her husband had to drag her home after drinking raki.
You can drink the Raki alone but you can also add water or ice and the raki changes the color to a white or pearl.
The turkish people sometimes gather and drink raki , eat cold and hot salad , cheese and playing music or laughing.
Uskudar and Kadikoy
by maykal
Don't neglect the Asian parts of Istanbul. Although there aren't so many of the traditional tourist attractions on this side of the Bosphorus, this is where 'real life' goes on (of course it exists on the European side too, but at times in Sultanahmet and Taksim it doesn't seem like it!). The large suburb of Uskudar has many old mosques and some interesting markets, while further south, and even more 'off the beaten path', is Kadikoy, an area I saw a lot of, as it was the ferry stop for Erenkoy where my friend lives. We spent a couple of evenings at the teahouses on the seafront (from where this photo was taken), and these are prime locations for sunset views across to Haydar Pasa (the Asian train terminal...better than it sounds!) and in the far distance, the minarets of Sultanahmet and Aya Sofya. Behind the port area and the wide and busy main road, are several narrow streets which seem to be quite a trendy area for students, with streetside cafes and second-hand bookshops. For more photos of Kadikoy, see my 'Sunsets Travelogue'...
Open-Air Modern Shopping Complex
by H-TownJourneyman about Kanyon
Kanyon, which opened in 2006, is a huge shopping mall, office building, and residential apartment complex, situated in the financial district of Levent. The 4 story mall has a fabulous futuristic design, and is open-air. At night, the blue and purple lighting gives it an even more unique and fashionable appearance. Among the 160 stores located here, there are several cafes and restaurants, department and clothing stores, a car dealership, a grocery store, a fitness center, and a cinema. When I was here, on the first floor there was even a jazz concert being put on. In addition to the mall, there is a 26 story office building, and 179 residential apartments available for rent. Quite an incredible structure, and Istanbul's newest shopping experience!
