  • Great Location

This hotel has a fabulous location in the Sultanahmet area of Istnabul. The service is very good, everyone is very friendly and efficient. The room we had was well equipped and very comfortable. Beds very comfortable and bathrooms are clean and well designed

Unique Quality: The breakfast is a buffet style but there is a very extensive choice of both hot and cold food.Offerings included eggs, breakfast meat, cold sliced meats and cheese, fresh fruit, coffee, tea, juices, yogurt, cereals --- quite comprehensive by any standard.

Great location, great place to stay. Looking forward to going there again.

    Best Location & Staff

We have just returned from a week at this hotel. This hotel is great value for money, the rooms are basic but have everything you need and are absolutely spotless. The staff are really friendly and very, very helpful, my husband was ill for part of our stay and the staff couldn't do enough to help. A very pleasant stay and we would stay there again, for this area of Istanbul (which can be expensive) this really is good value for money.

Directions: The Valide Sultan's location is excellent: at the quiet northern end of Kutllugun Sok, right across the street from the posh FourSeason Hotel Istanbul.Ayasofya (St.Sophia ) and the gate to Topkapi Palace are a two-minute walk away.

  • Istanbul "Charming" hotel

The Hotel Valide Sultan ( is my home in Istanbul, and I love it there. I have stayed at least 15 times, from a few days to two weeks at a time over the past five years in this small (15 room) hotel that is classified as a "Charming" hotel, a special license converted Ottoman house. Decorated in an elegant 19th century style, the Valide Sultan is updated and comfortable, although the rooms are "cosy" (smallish). I would highly recommend the hotel to anyone who wants a beautiful experience in friendly Turkish hospitality, and to feel that they are part of the heart of Istanbul. The Valide Sultan is very conveniently located in the Old City/Sultanahmet, just 1 block from the entrance of the Topkapi Palace, and a seven-minute walk to the Hippodrome, Blue Mosque, Turkish and Islamic Museum, Cistern, Arasta Bazaar, lots of restaurants, and the tramway; it is only a slightly longer walk to the Grand Bazaar.

Unique Quality: The rooftop restaurant, which serves an excellent large breakfast buffet (included in the room rate,) as well as lunch and dinner, has a wraparound outdoor terrace with a view on one side of dolphins playing at the mouth of the Sea of Marmaris and the fascinating traffic of ships constantly plying the Bosphorus, and on the other an unobstructed view of the magnificent Aya Sofia, a 5th century Byzantine basilica which is only one block away. The rooms also have these outstanding views, as well as cable TV and mini-bars. There is a special larger "Princess Room", with a brass canopy bed. The hotel has an elevator from the beautifully appointed lobby to all floors. However, the stars of the Valide Sultan are the superb and gracious staff and owners, and the outstanding 24-hour service they offer. They have become like family to me.

Directions: Sultanahmet/Old City. One block s/e of the main gate to the Topkapi Palace and Aya Sofia Basilica, and just behind the Four Seasons Hotel

"Pansions & Hotels"

Independent travelers come in all sizes and shapes and so it is with this listing of places to stay. By city, you will find listings for hostels, pensions, guesthouses, and hotels. Istanbul is a large city so the district is also indicated.

Prices do vary by time of year. In April or September you may have a lovely room for $15, but in the middle of summer the same room may be $30. In August and September we recommend you e-mail, phone ahead, or arrive at your destination by early afternoon.

All the prices on our pages are listed in U.S. dollars as the high inflation rate in Turkey doesn't make the use of Turkish lira practical.

Rooms are rented according to the number of people sleeping in them and the headings on our pages list the single room rate.

A final note to travelers: If you want amenities, such as air conditioning and fans, you usually will need to stay in 3-Star or higher rated hotel.

Istanbul Hotels, help me decide which one?

by missust

I have narrowed my hotel choices down to the following - 1. The Valide Sultan Konagi, 2. The Alzer and 3. The Arena. I'm thinking that the Alzer probably has the best location but would appreciate any comments you may have.

Thanks in advance for your kind help

Re: Istanbul Hotels, help me decide which one?

by June.b

I would say, you've made the right choice!

Though all of those 3 are well located within Sultanahmet, your choice is smack-bang in the center of Sultanahmet.

The other two hotels are located at the further back of the Blue Mosque, well, not really back, all of them are within proximity to all the historical sights but the one you choose is nearer and the Sultanahmet Tram station which I am certain that you would use during your stay in Istanbul is a short walk.

Then again, whether you're within Sultanahmet or few minutes walk from and to Sultanahmet (maybe Sirkeci or Beyazid where the Grand Bazaar is), there's not much difference except maybe for the view in some hotels, and also if walking is a major problem.

And for the record, Alzer Hotel is one of the popular choice.

If you may have other questions or concern, please checkout my FAQs and other tips at:

Go for it and enjoy your trip!
