Decadence in Besiktas

Best (5.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on December 3, 2012

There is no way to avoid this: The W Istanbul is decadent. You wouldn’t be able to tell from just looking at the hotel’s façade. Located in the upscale Beºiktaº neighbourhood, the W is in a beautiful old building with a regal neo-Classical front. It is at the intersection of two streets that meet at an acute angle, which gives it an added prominence that would not have otherwise been possible. Inside the stately building, the modern décor, the low lighting and the constant thump of bass music make the visitor feel as if she has ventured through an elegant portal into an adrenaline-and-youth-fuelled nightclub. This impression is only confirmed by the purple neon lighting that guides you along the hallways of the guestrooms, but is luckily absent the minute you enter your room. Here, the modern comforts that are hallmark of the W chain are seamlessly blended with the traditional architecture of the building. The dark wood and somber colours are balanced against the modern lines and patterns of the furniture and fixtures, and the bathroom and toilet facilities are cleverly tucked away in order to maximize enjoyment of living space. The dining room in the hotel is much, much brighter than the rooms, and does not make much of an effort to blend the two aspects of the hotel’s being: everything is firmly in the modern camp. Nevertheless, the breakfast is well appointed and delicious, and is sure to take your mind off any design or architectural failings you might notice on first blush.

Unique Quality: The best aspects of the hotel depend on the room your assigned. I was lucky enough to get one that lead out to private cabana in the small recess between the hotel’s building and the retaining wall supporting one of the streets that run by its sides. The cabana, which is undoubtedly off limits during the winter, is the perfect place to escape from the noise and frantic pace of the city centre and to enjoy some Turkish delight or baklava while reading.
