You need lira, and yes most places will change GBP. You'll generally get a better rate if you shop around at home before you go. In the same way that you'll get poor rates just turning up at a UK airport for money exchange you'll get a poor rate picking places at random at Ataturk.

As for transfers, we usually just pre-book a car. It costs very little and saves hassle at the flight. Whether you pre-book a return is up to you but it really wasn't very expensive.

Hi there,
You have to take the metro which you can access from the airport. At Zeytinburnu station you have to change the metro line and you can get out at Gulhane stop. GBP can be exchanged in Istanbul easily. Better rates at the city rather than the airport. You can check my Istanbul page for extensive tips and reviews.

You will need Turkish Lira. However, there are plenty of bank ATM machines in Istanbul, so you can get cash with your bank card after you arrive.

Gulhane is the tram stop right after Sultahmet. Public transport - you can take the Metro from Ataturk airport, when you get out of the arrival gate take the escalator going down the metro station , there's a sign so u won't get lost, once at the basement, walk to the far end it's on the left side. Buy a token, get down at Zeytinburnu, transfer to the Tramvay and it'll take you to Gulhane. Total fare would be TL3.

Geta turkish lira first to buy your token and aside from ATM machines at the airport, there are money exchanges, a hundred pound won't hurt, maybe ul lose 2-3TL compared to downtown exhcange rates.

Have fun!

Travel Tips for Istanbul

A week here now

by benazer

As i walk around the city my mind is temporarily turned off.i walk and walk and record everything i see with my eyes and with my camera and with my ears. in fact i record every thing with all my senses, many other tourists here looking around with their large eyes.
A happy Japanese woman sits next to me in the metro.i ask her if she is enjoying the city, she replies yes with a big smile.
Last night i was out hunting for a nice restaurant, this looks fine, maybe next one will be better and so on,then i heard some music, the next restaurant was the place i was looking for some musicians were playing some very sweet Turkish music,I ordered my dinner and sat down in a daze just enjoying the wonderful musicians, specially the violin player.
Took some pictures too naturally, will publish them as soon as i can.....
My fourth day in Istanbul, weather still very nice, the people, the city all very very nice.
Been to Asian side yesterday, today I will just hung around Istanbul soaking in the atmosphere, will sit at a pavement cafe and do some people watching...
Day 5 in sunny and hot Istanbul, sat at the cafes, watched people walk around, eat some delicious food, looked at shops and watched some history.Few tour guides tried to show me around, watched the moon rise over the minarets of Istanbul,in the evening time...
There seems to be an internet cafe here in almost every street and they are very cheap, cost around 70 cents.
The cash machines accepts all the usual cards and you can withdraw dollars, euros or Turkish lira... Turkish music at a restaurants.
People rushing around as if there is no tomorrow..

The Father of Modern Turkey

by mrclay2000

A statue commemorating Kemal Mustapha (known as Ataturk, the Father of the Turks) stands at the point of Saray Burnu above Topkapi Palace, facing the Bosporus. Believe it or not, this was the first statue commemorating a Turk ever raised in this city. Mustapha, once a commander in WWI at Gallipoli, brought Turkey into the 20th century by insisting on commerce, infrastructure improvements and discarding Arabic script in the modern education system for western letters. The pinkish haze in the photograph by the way is not the luster of a Turkish sunset but rather the pollution that sits on the city almost unbroken for twenty-four hours in the day.

A hot tea before dinner.

by benazer

while waiting for my shish kebab the waiter bought a glass of tea for me.
very nice flavour and gives you apetite and best of all you dont need much water while eating which is no good for you.I had about 5 or 6 glasses of this tea every day,try it if you come to Istanbul.
