Hilton

Unfortunately I was not impressed with the Hilton hotels in Turkey. Of all the 5 star hotels we stayed in, they provided the worst service.

$$$

I stayed at the Hilton for 2 nights. The nice part is that it's the tallest building in the city, so you get the views. I was on the 18th floor, so the view was great. Also, the room had windows facing 2 directions -- so I had a sea view as well as a view of the city. I don't know if all the rooms have this, but it was a good idea. The hotel itself is a little run down; it could do with a renovation. We had some yellow carpet in the room with some stains. The staff is very helpful and customer service savvy though. I checked out the gym and the pool, both were acceptable but not exceptional if you know what I mean. The tennis court on the 10th floor is pretty cool, but it gets pretty windy up there! Breakfast was good. The restaurant, called Windows on the Bay, is very expensive. I was once in Paris on New Year's Eve and didn't pay as much for a drink as I did at this hotel. My Pina Colada was 28 YTL (about 14 Euro!!!) -- it was good though. All in all, it's a nice place to stay, but probably too pricey for what you get.

nice accomodation

well, we (spanky and i) stayed here our first several days here while i went flat-hunting. the staff was very professional and accomodating. although a little pricey it was nice to go to the gym to work out, lay out by the pool to relax or go to the spa to get a massage.

Restaurant in Izmir & taxi to Kusadasi

by BigFella06

Merhaba,

My first time to Turkey was in Istanbul on a business trip a long time ago. I always wanted to go back and explore it further from as a tourist and get to know with local people. So finally here I am! Although not the best time of the year, at the peak of the tourist season, we’ll do all possible to stay off the main touristy and busy areas.

We are spending most of our time in the around Efes, one day in Izmir and three days in Istanbul. We like archeology, nature, the beautiful sea and strolling around little villages, where we can enjoy a nice meal cooked not for the numerous tourists but mainly for locals and any visitors (tourists) who stop by… So if you know such place around Efes area, please let me know.

Few questions for Izmir forum:

Can someone recommend a nice restaurant with local or Turkish cuisine in Izmir city?

Is it easy to find a taxi at Izmir airport to go to Kusadasi region or it’s better to have booked one in advance? We may arrive really late at night but that depends on the connecting flight…

Is the taxi price from Izmir airport to Kusadasi about $50 and do we have to pay in $ or normally in the recently launched Yeni Turkish lira?

Tesekkurler,
BF

Well, as far as food is concerned, try Ay Ipek Restaurant. It's in the old market of Izmir behind the main square (853 Sokak No.11, Kemeralti Cami Sokak). They make the best kebabs I ever tasted. And they are cheap too:)
If you can't find a taxi at the airport (I am sure you will but...) you can check if there's a Turkish Airlines landing at that time. If there is, you can get the HAVAS bus (in front of the Domestic Terminal) which will take you into the city in front of the Hilton. And you can get a taxi from there. I don't know exactly about the prices. But you can always bargain a bit with the driver for a journey outside the city. They would normally accept foreign currency although it's always better to pay with Turkish Liras.
Oh, and if you arrive during the day, you can take that HAVAS to Hilton Izmir, then a taxi to Yeni Otogar (the New Bus Station) and from there there are plenty of buses to Kusadasi.

Hi coscon2004,

Thank you for the info. It's lunch time already and you made me hungry with the kebabs...

Take care,
BF
