Compare shopping in Izmir and Istanbul

by HosseinAI

marhaba

I'm planning to travel to turkey late August. I guess my wife will force me to have some shoppings! Specially clothings are in her intrest, offcourse I'm not so unintrested!

Regarding prices and quality, Izmir is better to shop or Istanbul?

merhaba

you know istanbul is bigger city than izmir so you can find many more options in istanbul but i think İzmir is cheaper and if u want to do shopping in İzmir best place is kemeraltı, but you need to bargain if u want to buy cheap

Re: Compare shopping in Izmir and Istanbul

Merhaba to you, I agree that izmir is marginally cheaper than istanbul. Quality will be much the same. izmir is the largest shopping place on the Aegean and is handier to visit for people in Kusadasi and Bodrum for example than going all the way to istanbul. There is an IKEA in izmir but I suspect you won't be doing any furniture shopping :0)

Travel Tips for Izmir

roads and mosques of Izmir

by Aggeliki

Izmir has very good roads but it is quite dangerous for a foreigner to drive in the city. They re driving very fast!!
The suburbs are very crowed , especially in the shopping areas, where the parking is very difficult.

Festivals, Olympiads etc.

Explore Alsancak's Back Streets!

by Pinat

Alsancak district, called Punto in old times, is one of the centers of Izmir. The neighborhood starts from the waterfront, called Kordon which is lined up with nice bars and fine restaurants, to the inner land.

If you get away from the seaside and take any narrow street towards the inner land, you will come across restored Ottoman houses, which are worth watching. These houses have survived the great fire that raged through the city during the Turkish War of Independence. Many houses have been restored, and some converted to public uses such as cafes, restaurants and boutiques.

Spare an hour for the streets of Alsancak!

Turkish Airlines from Heathrow...

by vonmilla

Turkish Airlines from Heathrow or Zurich. Take a taxi from Adnan Menderes airport to downtown; taxis are cheap in Izmir.
Buses if you know enough Turkish to buy tickets and comprehend the routes. Otherwise, use taxis; they're cheap. The Hilton is in the middle of town; if you get lost in an outlying district, get a taxi to take you to the Hilton.

visit a Mosque

by Kid-A

I haven't tried to count, but there must be hundreds and hundreds of Mosques in Izmir. You should visit one. It's a nice experience. I'm not religious, but I like the Islamic idea that we are all "reverts." You were always Muslim and if you convert to Islam, you are not really converting at all, because you always were -- so you're "reverting to Islam."
