It is not to easy to find a nice, cheap hotel/pension in Izmir. I stayed at Imperial hotel which is close to the train station and also Dokuz Eylül Meydan, where all buscompany offices are (and where the free service to and from the otogar stops). The area might not be the nicest, with a lot of men "hanging around), but the hotel is OK. It is clean enough.
I had a TV in my room but did not know if I was daring to use it as the cable didn't look well (mended with tejp). I tried and the TV worked for a few minutes but then stopped.
The fan in the roof was wobbeling like it was going to fall down any minute.
I had my own bathroom.
The room was 20 000 000 TL without breakfast.

iyon pansiyon...a young and sportive accomodation: a cute pension in phokaia
this is an old-greek-building turned out to be a pension by the owners.a simple, cheap accomodation and there is a kitchen in the courtyard ,so everyone can cook or prepare some food themselves. the owner of the pension is a very quite young man , being very friendy and helpful with the area. and hes got many cats around...well foca cannot be considered without cats though. its by the seaside but dont expect sea view from the rooms....rooms are very basic but fair enough....well , i recommend tihs pension particulary for backpackers !
cats.to me cats are the only "unique" things in the world. if you get along with the owner maybe he can borrow you his wind surfing !

the parks in Izmir seem to be quite comfortable, I didn't have the opportunity to test them, as I was staying with my friend Sinan; but I am sure they are not the worst option if you come to Izmir and find no place to stay ...
didn't ask, but would think it's not too expensive to take a nap there

I stayed at the Backpackers...
I stayed at the Backpackers Inn run by a wonderful family (Ellie she has lived in Australia and owns and runs the Inn.)
$8 per night for double room with shower and toilet.
$1.50 for breakfast.(if that)
The rooms are very clean and range from double to single rooms with showers and toilets and very secure. The staff are wonderful and fun to be with. There is a bar and disco. and a beautiful garden which is heaven when you have your evening meal or breakfast and for the less adventuros there is the TV room English movies in English.
And there is a free pick up service from and to the bus station and also a free pick up and drop of service at the historical and ancient sites.

Hotel Koseoglu: Near Basmane train station
This hotel is well located, just a few hundred metres away from the Basmane Railway Station along the busy Fevzi Pasha Bulvari. I got a lovely, friendly welcome from the owner/manager guy who helped me get my suitcase from my car, parked across the street and then got someone to park it in a car park around the back of the hotel. I had a very small single room which was OK for the one night I was in Izmir but other much larger rooms are available. My room had a fridge, a/c, TV, wardrobe and a clean, modern bathroom and cost me TL40 (January 2010). Breakfast is also included.

Oba camping: Camping
Just outside Izmir in Guzelbahce you will find Oba Motel/Camping. It's a nice camping with lots of conifers. Probably you will first have to clean up your campingplace, before putting your tent up. The douches and toilets are average clean. Remarkable the douches have salty water and the hot water is really hot! I nearly burned my hand with closing the tap.
There are also washingmachines. They are from the hotel, but if you will ask one of the cleaning people you probably can use them for a small contribution (in the evening when their boss is gone). There are two big clean swimmingpools with several slides and guards. Just outside the camping there are a lot of fish and barbeque restaurants. You can also have your breakfast at one of the restaurants at the sea. For Turkish meaning expensive: € 15,-- for two persons and one tent.
