Turkish Treats!! Food Experience in Bodrum
by Lyndra
A Turkish food menu is a treat and anyone used to mediterranean/Greek food will find Turkish food a delight. The usual precautions should be taken regarding eating meat (ensure it is well cooked) and veggies (washed well) but the food is worth trying. It tends to be fairly spice free and most stomachs can cope.
There will be an array of UK foods but try some of the following
* Stuffed Vegetables - usually a regular starter in most restaurants and vary between meat and rice/additional vegetable fillings. Make a nice starter or a light snack if you do not want something heavy.
* Meze - just like Tapas. An assortment of small plates with snack size tasters of Turkish foods. Sometimes just melon and sometimes more adventurous.
* Bodrum is a fish lovers dream and there is usually calamari on the menu. The fishermen still ply their trade by the harbour daily and the restaurants near the front get their fish fresh.
* Kebab - the favourite of every drunken person but so different when you have the genuine article from it's homeland! Usually served with lashings of fresh salad and bread. Doner and shish just like at home.
* I'm not a pudding fan but you will always find Baklava (it's Turkish not Greek apparently!) and pastries - Turkish sweet is very sweet.
TURGUTREIS - Esplanade, Parks, Restaurants
by balhannah
I enjoyed walking the long Esplanade here. I walked to the Marina, here there were expensive shops, but a lot not open in May. Expensive Boats as well! Pretty flowers, ... Bouganvillea was in bloom and beautiful, a walkway through very tall Palms, a Nice Park, and quite a few seafront Restaurants made this a very nice area for a stroll or to have a meal. I myself, settled for a Cuppa and an Icecream and enjoyed the view.
White House
by Lyndra about Bar Street
This is a great bar for sitting, drinking and watching the world go by while being entertained by the humorous waiting staff (who also double as an impromptu dance troupe!). Beer is not the cheapest in Bodrum but the views over the water at twilight as you drink an Efes. It is very busy if the fanatical turkish football matches are on and the place fills with shoting turks cheering for their teams. Definately a little less intimidating in terms of the hassle but expect to be enticed and cajoled to come in!! Casual clothes totally OK here. Save the dressing up for Halikarnas.
Excellent Ambience, Less Excellent Food...
by Lyndra about Kocadon Restaurant
The Kocadon Restaurant is set in a beautiful location on Bodrum Marina (Just opposite the Marina itself). The restaurant is set in a courtyard behind traditional Bodrum houses. The tables are set among overhanging trees, absolutely stunning.
The service is excellent, the maitre'd was well spoken and knowledgeable. The food was delivered to the tables quickly and was good quality but the menu is limited as is the wine choice. The Turks are still developing an acquaintance with a wine menu. Food here has limited side options and so the Stroganoff that I ordered was a protein overload. My companions who ate meat and fish dishes also agreed that some potato or carb side dish would have complemented the meal well.
The only starter available is a buffet of Turkish meze which can be an acquired taste if you do not like them. I would not eat here again but am very glad that I tried it. No favourite dish, just loved the feel of the place and it's location.
