Driving conditions around Bodrum

by Elena_blue

I want to rent a car for 2-3 days when in Bodrum in July. I wonder if driving in the area and perhaps even up to Ephesus is difficult, may be dangerous for me... I have in my mind the traffic and driving conditions in Istanbul and I m discouraged...

Hi, i will check out the replies you get with interest as Id like to know as well - I usually drive wherever and have driven a lot of places but not Turkey yet - we were there on a big bus tour and didnt notice then any particular problems with the traffic so imagine as driving in Morocco and others have told me driving in Egypt that Turkey will be fine.

Bodrum is not a big metropolis like Istanbul.
Driving is very easy; the roads are well signposted and readable.
The road conditions are also very good.
The drive to Ephesus is easy, take your time at first and get yourself accustomed to the local driving conditions.
Be aware, especially at night, you could come across farm traffic in the rural areas; it will probably be unlit and moving very slow.
I did 1,500 miles in Turkey last year September and enjoyed every minute of it.
One further tip, if while driving in the mountainous areas of Turkey, is you come across a large rock in the middle of the road, don’t assume it has fallen off the mountainside, it is sometimes a warning that just around the bend there is a broken down vehicle or some other road hazard, if you see such a thing, slow down.
Relax, enjoy the driving, and enjoy Turkey.

Scuba Diving - The Lighthouse (Black Mountains)

by Scouski

Scuba Diving - well what can I say - I'm a PADI Divemaster and therefore love to dive, I would recommend diving to anyone who is fit enough to do it, but just not here. I have to say it was not worth the effort - i could count on one hand the things I encountered during both dives the day I went. I cannot comment on other dive sites but should anyone suggest diving here - DON'T SIGN UP - trust me.

Great for socialising, drinking and dancing!

by Gemsy about Deja Vu Bar/Club

This is located on bar street next to Red Lion and overlooking the sea (used to be Orange Club) still same people but a different name.

I have been to Bodrum twice and love coming here! Has a great atmosphere, friendly staff and the music is great. Its like a bar/club with seating mostly outside where you can watch people passing by. Some seating inside also. Then you have the dancefloor towards the back. It has a great sound system for a place of it's size and you will want to dance until you drop!

Starts to get busy at 1am and stays open until 5am.

Go to Bodrum and go there!

Gem xx Don't think there is a dress code??

Bodrum from the Airport

by Erkmen

When you reached the Bodrum airport, if you dont have a bus or car waiting for you, than you should most probably be getting on to a taxi..

For many tourists Taxis are a kind of nightmare, they always think that they will be ripped off as its their first time there...But you can feel comfortable in Bodrum.

Taxi prices are set to one fix rate, and changing according to the location.. There is no taximeter but a fix rate.. And these prices are listed on a panel, where you get your taxi..

So this helps you to know how much you are going to pay.. No risk of being ripped off, and no place for the feeling "Is he taking the longest way to take more money??"

Taxi prices are valid 24 hrs, and they are in Turkish lira.. the picture shows the distances the prices for 2003.. Dont be dazzled with the zeros, 1 Euro= 1650,000 TRL, So taxi to Bodrum from the airport is around 30,- Euro..

Dont try to find the Mausoleum

by traveloturc

One of the Seven Wonders of the World.
The Mausoleum of Halikarnassus was an above-ground tomb for the ruler of Halikarnassus (Halicarnassus), Mausolus; the tomb was completed by his wife, Artemisia, in 353 BCE; Mausolus was the Persian satrap of the district of Karia (Caria) with Halikarnassus as his capitol city.
Although Mausolus was a Persian, his inclinations were decidedly Greek; he was noted for his aggressive political maneuvering and lavish spending on public works projects; he was married to his sister, Artemisia, and died in the prime of his life.
As a lasting monument to his fame and fortune, Artemisia constructed an above-ground tomb in the center of the city of Halikarnassus to house the body of her beloved husband throughout eternity; the tomb was 140 feet (43 meters) in height including the podium, the colonnade, the pyramidal roof and the chariot statue that crowned the structure.
This Mauselum was transferred completely to London and you can visit this monument in London if you want instead of its natural and local area.
