Religions in Turkey
by Lyndra
Much is said about religious issues in Muslim countries. This is not an issue in Turkey which is a secular country since the days of Ataturk. This means that all religions in Turkey are entitled to be treated equally - Turkey is 99% Muslim and the remaining 1% is mostly Jewish and Christian but all religions are free to worship openly and suffer no discrimination. When you visit Bodrum yu will be delightfully woken by the sound of the muezzin calling Muslim people to prayer. You will hear this a five times daily and the sound is enigmatic. There a quite a few mosques in Bodrum and some are open to visitors. Of historical interest are the Tepecik Mosque and the Mustafa Pasha Mosque which both date from the 18th Century.
Should you find yourself visiting a mosque you ned to remember the apropriate behaviour and dress to be respectful - no shorts, no short skirts, no visits during prayer times, women need to cover their arms and head and shoes will have to be removed. It might be handy to travel with a light scarf for occasions where you happen upon a mosque to visit.
Gumusluk-A Wonder of Nature
by voyageur2
Bodrum is not only a destination for nightlife seekers, it is also a rich peninsula full of nice views. Gumusluk is a village at the west end of Bodrum peninsula. It is the right place for good fish restaurants and breathing the peaceful air of Aegean. You can walk through the sea along a shallow path to Rabbit Island. You can see ancient City of Myndos down the sea. That island is very small but lovely and a home for a few rabbits. From its top the views of closer islands, bay and sea are excellent. Enjoy the wind bringing freshness of Aegean.
Disco Boat!!
by Lyndra about Marine Club Catamaran
This is a huge catamaran which is moored next to St Peters Castle. You wil hear it before you see it! There are 5 bars on this massive boat and you start the night at the dock as the boat fills up. The music is a mix and they have theme nights (R&B night etc), dancers and DJ's too. At about 1am the boat sets sail into the sea around Bodrum. The music and drinking can go on till 4 or 5 am but when youy have had enough there are boats that ferry custiomers back to shore. A unique way to go clubbing!! Smat casual is the best way to go.
Proper turkish fastfood!
by sigourney about sirin
My fella couldnt pass this place without being extremely tempted! it wasnt the cheapest place to go for a doner or chicken kebab, but was far far far from the dearest! (right in the bazaar, and even they're not dear!) Sirin is a tiny kepab bar as you walk out towards the east bay from town, oppisite penguin restaurant and under/next to lokanta 6, its simple. you've got chicken or doner meat (with veggies and such like cooking in it) and you get a choice of pitta or bread (we always had bread, the pitta is more like tortiila) and that is that, you can sit in the little side area where they have peppers in pots for you to add at will, you get a lemon towel after to wipe your hands, see? real turkish fastfood!! they do sodas in the fridge, its so tiny you'd miss it, but try not to, the food was so very yummy, a great snack, when we went in may it was 2'500 tl and in sep it was 3'000 so in other words, a pound . go figure!
Turkish Baths
by SweetLakeB
This is so much fun and really relaxing. I went to a Turkish bath in 2001 and my friend and I were surprised at how rough the "massages" looked but as soon as we were on that table it was totally relaxing. The Turkish bath we went to had made a little bit of a show of it by having big Sumo-wrestler like men to do the massages to "scare" women. We had such a laugh.
