Travel Tips for Dalyan
Dalyan Town
by sandysmith
The town of Dalyan is situated near the river, some 22km from the resort of Marmaris - many tour boats come from here. It became a well established fishing village, life was simple here. Today on the wharf, which is in front of the mosque, there are a lot of excursion boats belonging to the fishing fraternity and tours can be made daily into the delta for the thermal spring mud baths, Caunos and of course the beach. Have a drink at one of the many pleasant waterside cafes first.
Here are the Lycian graves!
by JLBG
The Lycian graves were carved in the rocks of the hill in the IVth BC by the Lycians.
Photo 1 : we are now close enough to see well seven of them. Four are medium size and look like the front of a temple, with four columns and a fronton.
The largest is not so open. Is it a different style or more likely, it has not been finished. It seems to have been designed with 6 columns but only the top has been carved. The story says that its building was abandoned when Alexander the Great conquered the country and put down the Lycian civilization, 2,300 years ago.
On the right, another one seems also unfinished. At a lower level, a much smaller one has no columns.
Photo 2 : photos are not easy as the boat does not remain still. The photo shows more clearly the five main graves.
Photo 3 shows only the left graves but shows that several columns are broken.
Photo 4 shows another group of graves but we cannot get closer and they do not seem to be in very good condition.
Pier with shade
by JLBG
After we had visited the Lycian graves and the ancient city of Caunos, we needed a drink and a rest. We were all more than happy to see that our cruise boat was to moor along this small wooden and shaded pier. Tall poplars made a nice shade while oleanders in fool bloom gave a nice scent.
