Fish traps

As I walked faster than the group, I had enough time to reach an elevation and have a look at the river.
The first photo shows that an enclosure made with wood and reeds is standing across the river, drawing a U shape. This is to collect fishes and this explains why the entrance had to be open for our boat. The fishes are mainly grey mullets and yhey are caught whe they go back to the sea, once they have hatched their eggs in Lake Köyçeyiz.
The second and third photo shows that there is actually a complex system of enclosures with narrow catwalks running along them. They allow to “push” fishes in one enclosure or in another, in order to keep them ready so that they are easy to get. This is not really a surprise as the river is named Dalyan, which, in Turk, means fishery!
Dalyan (Turkey)

Dalyan is a great town with lots to do. You can take a short boat ride to the Mud Baths, or the beaches. There also is a great hike to the tombs across the river. We stayed a week at the Hotel Dalyan and made many side trips into the country side. Turtle Beach also shouldn't be missed. The beach went for a couple miles and there were only a couple people on the beach. The water was warm and inviting.
