Lycian Coast

by btlim

Plan to stay in Fethiye for 3 nightd as a base for my visit in this area. Is it a good idea or Oludeniz a better idea? Any good trekking area nearby ?

You don't say what type of accommodation you would be using but Fethiye will have more options. Oludeniz is definitely worth a visit and there is a lot to see in the area.

http://www.icemtour.com/turkeyhotels/kemal_hotel_fethiye_turkey.html for a comfortable inexpensive hotel on the harbour.

Fethiye is ideal as a base if you intend to travel around and are not hiring a car, as the dolmus station and coach station are located there - also plenty of taxis. It has a harbour, and the old part of town, 'Paspatur', is pretty with a choice of shops and good restaurants. If you wanted to stay somewhere with a view the best place is Karagozler, which is a 10 minute walk out of Fethiye, on a hill overlooking a bay, so you have wonderful views from your balcony. Olu Deniz has a lovely beach and also has lots of shops - it's much livelier than Fethiye, which is quite 'laid back', and, of course, there is always pargliding for the brave. It takes at least 20 mins to travel by dolmus into Fethiye, depending on whether it's high or low season, as it crawls along looking for passengers. Personally I find Olu Deniz a wee bit 'touristy' now, and the shopping area is not very exciting - ideal for teenagers who want fake designer clothes. I don't know much about trekking areas but from what I've heard there's a popular walk somewhere above/near Olu Deniz. We now always stay in Calis (Calis Beach) which is a 15 min dolmus ride, or 30 mins boat trip from Fethiye.

Travel Tips for Fethiye

Little boats wth goodies

by Aurorae

If you take the boat tour around the coast, there will be plenty of small boats with various food coming to your big boat, offerring fruit, pastries, ice cream and pancakes. It is very usual that the woman is on the boat with the big pancake "oven" and making them as the boat goes.

Saklikent entrance

by Aurorae

There is an entrance fee to Saklikent canyon, and I forgot what it is! But it shouldn't be a lto if I remember well... First you have to cross the wooden bridge and walk on another one by the side of the rocks, before arriving to the restaurant where the actual canyon path begins.

Butterfly valley

by Erkmen

A must, must, must see place for backpackers..

Butterfly valley covered with pine trees and surrounded by steep cliffs was declared a natural reserve under protection of first degree. For thousands of years, its only habitants were the butterflies and local fauna. Still now, the valley hosts 136 kinds of butterflies and moths within the fascinating waterfalls..

Now the valley is operated by volunteers, you can have a short daily trip or you can stay in the valley at nite.. I suggest you to stay at least one night at the valley and climb to the waterfall early in the morning. There is no place where you can be with the Butterflies this much. Climbing to the waterfall is dangerous, due to slippery stones, so be careful... I will prepare a much detailed info regarding the valley.. Cause it is still one of my favourite place...

I have put very nice pictures of Butterfly valley from my camera to my Butterfly valley traveloque, have some time to visit there..

Kaya Village

by Aurorae

Kaya village, or ghost town is a place that is abandoned after great Greek-Turkish migrations. Before, Greek people used to live there, and after the wars with Turkey, they went back to Greece, and Turks from Greece came back to Turkey. But instead of settling in Kayaköy that was abandoned by Greeks, they settled in the Egean area of Turkey as the climate was more suitable to what they got used to back in Greece. thus the Kaya village remained abandoned definitely and with years it was ruined. Nowadays there are pleanty of ruined houses and churches, but it´s not a dead place, since there are various feasts, rpograms and belly dances ever day, as well as horse riding and trekking. There is a wonderful trail down to Fethiye and Ölüdeniz as well, from Kayaköy. It can also be reached by dolmus bus from Hisarönü.
