Driving from Izmir to Olu Deniz and beaches

by mat_at1

My girlfriend and I (in our 20s) will be traveling to the area in late April/early May. We will be flying into either Dalaman or Izmir and are trying to figure the best way to get around. I was thinking of hiring a car since our time is very limited (four full days) and would like to spend a couple of days at the beach and a couple exploring areas around Izmir. My girlfriend really wants to visit Olu Deniz and we are looking to paraglide so I figure the beaches around this area would be our best bet this time of year. From what I've gathered, bus transportation would not be difficult or too costly, however, due to the limited time I thought that having a car may provide more freedom and flexibility. Does anyone know how practical this seems especially in regards to parking if we are staying in/around Olu Deniz and Izmir. Do the hotels/resorts typically provide free parking for their guests? Also, if anyone has any suggestions as far as beaches and/or fairly inexpensive hotels, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Matt

Hi?

Parking? This is the funniest question one may post for Turkey :) No offense, but here is unlike most of other countries and you will NOT have any problem in parking. Any place is simply a parking place :)

As you may guess from above statement, traffic is quite unusual here. I may sound a bit protective but if you would not travel from one location to another, only spend in the region of Oludeniz (Fethiye), it is not needed to rent a car. Bus or local ransportaion would just do fine.

For hotels, you can book by http://secure.bookinturkey.com/default.asp

Thanks for the helpful response and I'm glad I was able to amuse you with my question :) Well I want to visit the areas in and around Izmir and Fethiye and I know some of the major sites are located outside of the city. With the limited time you still think just traveling by bus or dolmus should be sufficient and would give enough time?

You have a problem, Izmir and Oludeniz are pretty far apart. 5-6 hours and paragliding means an early start. Car rental seems best but either choose 1 place or the other because getting back to catch that flight takes time also. Hotels and pensions by the dozen with parking.

Izmir and Fethiye a bit distant apart. It may need 5 hours driving. Only for 4 days, then it is best to fly to Dalaman or Bodrum airport for Fethiye. Then rent a car, for Izmir. Assuming you can have one open jaw (fly to Dalaman/Bodrum but return from Izmir airport) you can rent a car for single direction to Izmir (to leave the car in Izmir).

In your short timeframe I would be inclined to choose either izmir or Olu Deniz. That drive is massive and you have to do it both ways. Also petrol is very expensive in Turkey at the moment so that is an additional expense for this long distance drive. If you fly into Bodrum Milas airport you are in sensible driving distance for izmir, and more manageable for Olu Deniz. :o)

Hi Matt,
I'm in Oludeniz over the same time period as you. I'm also renting a car through moneysupermarket £200 for 15 days.
I booked a hotel Montebello Hotel double room through medhotels it worked out at £9/night, 3* and got good reviews.

Hope this helps mate.

Travel Tips for Fethiye

Off season Fethiye

by LostinParadiseTR

Just to say that many many more hotels, restaurants etc are staying open through the year these days. Winter can be a good time to explore this part of Turkey ......uncrowded and very relaxed. But the nights are cold! You will need extra layers for early morning and evenings .....but a good percentage of sunny days with temps at 20 deg or so afternoons. The smells ! Streets that smell of jasmine and honeysuckle ..............the smell of really fresh fruit and veg in the open bazaar by the canal!

daysack or backpack(if your not join a tour you will have to carry all your stuff with you) trekkers should have trekking boots, raingear, swimwear, sunhat, and sunblock take some tubes for bees : they are all around and it really hurts!(esp. be careful in october while locals collecting the honey from hoves. if your not guided with a tour do not forget to take your sleeping bags and tent with you.because you will need early booking to stay in the local houses. you can try absailing in the butterfly valley : there are 2 options. on the west side of the bay there are ropes but for professionals , bring you ropes and hanging stuff with you try to absail on the east wing !

Turkish for Tourists

by Jetgirly about Megri Restaurant

You can't miss Megri. This sprawling restaurant takes up the biggest plaza in the center of Fethiye. When I visited the World Cup was in full swing, so tables were full of people watching the large screens they'd pulled out for the occasion. It was high season so they were very full and the servers were busy. I asked for a mixed mezze plate, requesting only vegetarian choices. I was served a dish of typical mezze such as yogurt-pursulane dip and cooked eggplant. Everything was fine, but I would have liked to try something new or unexpected. Megri is a very good choice for large groups with lots of palates to please, but it's not a top stop for vegetarians.
