Travelers Cheques

by Ronaldliz

I have been told by my travel agent that there’s a problem cashing sterling travelers cheques in Turkey. We were in Icmeler in May and had no problems, but we are back there on the 23rd August and not sure what to do with changing our money.
Can you give me some advice

Re: Travelers Cheques

by Ronaldliz

Thank you for your quick response. I think this might be the best bet, as we don’t want to change all our holiday money in to lira.
Thanks ronnie

Re: Travelers Cheques

personal cheques are not accepted in Turkey. Many change officers cash travellers cheques without commission. But there may be many who dont. It is duty of all bank offices to cash sterling traveller cheques but with commission.

Re: Travelers Cheques

Hi Sirvictor

Thanks for the reply. I have been in touch with Icmeler on line and they say that there is no problem with chashing T/Cs in Icmeler. Its quite worrying to say the least. When your travel agent says there's a problem and the people in Turkey say there's not a problem. My friend in icmeler is making some inquieries for me just to make sure.

Dear Ronald,

You are rigth some places in the Agean cost accepting traveler cheque but it not very common in Turkey.Thats why people told you they have had trouble with travel cheques.

After banknote travel cheque was second alternative for keeping safe your money in 50's.But this didnt come to Turkey never. But after 80's Turkey skip that travel cheque and accepted that plastic cards (debbit cards and credit cards) very quickly.

Now all around Turkey you can find and ATM and withdraw your money. No trouble.
You withdraw the money as local currency (New Turkish lira)but when you go back to Turkey you will receive your bank receipt in GBP.

You do not change your GBP to YTL.It is very easy to use.

When you go come to Turkey bring your debbit card visit a Turkish bank ATM and
put your plastic card inside the machine click on english language and
press on the sections like 200 New Turkish lira or 20 YTL (New Turkis Lira)
spend this money.DO not have to carry with you a travel cheque. When you go back to Uk you will get the bill in GBP.

It is very easy to use ATM do not very.

Thanks ranger.
I think you are right. It seams most people have the same point of view as you.
We were there in May had no problems with T/Cs. But our Travel Agent said there was a problem. I think I will use my card.

All the best

I read my answer to your question my english is awfully :)Sorry about that.
When I type very fast,I receive that result. So if you bring your bank card you can shop with it too.if your card is Electron or Maestro labeled you can use it in restaurants or cafes or hipermarkets.

I did same in Croatia what I told you.Have a good time on your trip.
If you go to icmeler visit Koycegiz,Datca,Fethiye,Patara too.

Rent a car for 7 days (350€ for 1 week) get around.I recommend to you.

Icmeler 2005 and 2006

"Canal area is beautiful"

Icmeler History... Icmeler used to be a village where nobody went or visited other than the villagers. Marmaris, even used to be a small holiday resort. As Marmaris got popular in the 80's and got discovered by foreigners visiting this city, Icmeler slowly started developing. Investors saw Icmeler as the next place of tourists. Marmaris got bigger and bigger and became a world-wide resort for people all over the world. Even forests and hills around Marmaris turned into big hotels and resorts. The total number of restaurants and bars in Marmaris doubled each year serving some 3 million tourists a year. Icmeler meanwhile was just a place now to go and see the village life in Turkey. Now hotel developments got faster as more tourists came to see Icmeler. Marti was the only resort at the time, and was know for it's quiet, by the nature location. This all changed in 10 years, from 1990 to 2000, many hotels, aparts, restaurants , bars, shops etc were built and Icmeler was now a top-class resort. It was big enough to serve everyone's needs yet so small that everyone visiting or working there felt like they were all neighbours.

"Friendly Icmeler"

Icmeler is in the south west of Turkey, and just 5 miles from busier neighbour of Marmaris and just 75 miles to the west of Dalaman airport and surrounded by rocky, forested foothills that drop quite steeply down to the coast. Icmeler. Particularly suitable for family holidays with a beach of mixture of sand and shingle with watersports including windsurfing and jet skis; there are separated areas for swimmers. This, together with calm waters and a gently shelving beach and the view out to sea from Icmeler beach is stunning with islands in the distance rising out of the warm blue waters of the Mediterranean, once just an extension of Marmaris but is now a holiday destination in its own right. The town has managed to hang onto much of its traditional Turkish character with narrow streets, whitewashed buildings, set around a mosque. Behind the Içmeler beach and along the promenade are beach cafes, shops and restaurants. Further back are hotels, attractive public gardens and children’s play areas. Also a short walk to the old village is a must. The transfer from Dalaman airport to Icmeler is approximately 2 hours, but a new road is being put in at the moment so the journey will become shorter.

Apart from these lovely cocktails, that is now what makes Icmeler different than the other places to visit. It has this magic to it and once you stay there over night, you don't want to stay anywhere else but there. where it makes you think everyone on this destination resort is happy with their lives. This is usually true. There are people working in Icmeler who choose to work there even though they could make more money somewhere else. Many of the workers lived in the village and all had nick names in english. - to help you remember them. very very caring and friendly...maybe its because if one thing goes wrong in Icmeler, everyone in Icmeler will know. Accommodation in Icmeler is of a high standard
and there are many restaurants of good quality to choose from at inexpensive prices. It is for those who wish to relax and get to know the locals. In the heat of the day Icmeler is quiet when everyone is lapping up the sunshine on the beach or poolside or perhaps on a day tour exploring the wonderful countryside, culture and history. By night it comes alive with the bustle from very lively restaurants and the canal side stalls selling their fancy goods and trinkets.
