Club Portobello-A studie in how NOT to run a hotel

Club Portobello has very nice exterior. The swimmingpools are nice and clean, the gardens are green and the reception areas are nice and clean.

That is the positive side.

This hotel has a management problem. It seems like one person are taking care of all dections. She is not called the hotel-manager, but the reservation-manager.

If you are going to get a refund because you noticed that have paid to much money paid for a service or goods, the staff needs her permission. If you have to change the room, beacuse of 2 cm of water the floor in the middle of the night, you have to wait till the next morning or afternoon or evening or night, if she really pops up this day.to even discuss the problem. -Well is your problem, not the hotels problem.

If the reception are providing some information eg. concerning one the restaurant, don't belive it. Check yourself. Not because that the reception tries to cheet you, nor because the restaurant tries to cheet the reception, so the reception can tell something about the resturant that they can't delivere.

The housekeeping - Well they are trying to do their best. But they are understaffed and have problems to delivere the cleening

The restaurants are not understaffed, so they are standing there with cheewing-gum, mobilephones, watching the understaffed housekeeping-department, look at their watches wondering how many hours it is before they can go home. A

nd the guests in the restaurant- Well we are busy watching and pressing the phones and talking to the other staff in the restuarnt, so you have to we few minutes.

So I am promise you: I will never, ever in my life stay at this hotel again. Why? Because of the low level of service.

Please find an another hotel in Marmris

Unique Quality: The lack of service delivery system. A good example of how not to run a hotel.

Club Portobello

It's a big complex located in a quiet area, not far away from the centre of the city and the beach. They have hotel rooms as well as apartments.
Three big swiming pools (one with slides), one swiming pool for children. They are surrounded by big orange garden where they put beds so you can spend all day there.

My Worst Accommodation Ever

by A TripAdvisor Member

Club Portobello has been the worst place I have ever stayed. We were in a party of 11 people which inc. my 2 sons aged 7 and 3. We were lucky enough to be staying in the new building, well i say lucky! On three occasions we had no water or electric all night, which meant, no lights on to go to the toilet (or water to flush the chain) and no water to get washed in the morning and when working it would be very cold after 6pm. The maid service was awful (rather than move my husband's size 8 flipflop, she mopped round it). The smell of urine from the bathroom was leathel. The barmen would charge different prices for different people in each of the three bars and happy hour was rarely enforced. Even trying to get a simple meal was difficult, my father and son waited nearly an hour on a marguerita pizza and bacon on toast, now im no Delia Smith but come on! My father sent it back and the waiter and the chef ended up in fisty cuffs!By this stage of the holiday i was disgusted only to be told by the receptionist I had incurred a 20 million laundry bill, because my bed sheets were stained, which were rarely changed anyway! i was furious and asked him to show me the sheets, which he couldnt, nor could he tell me what the stains were. I would never stay at this hotel again but do plan to return to turkey next year. It is a fantastic country and well worth visiting, we met some lovely people and had a ball.

stayed in j block

We went with first choice and these apartments let them down a bit because first choice were brilliant and helpful but the apartment was very basic. It was small and just about ok to stay in for two weeks. However it was very clean. Also i would strongly sugest that you get a safety deposit box which is 20 pound i think. This is because things out of are room were stolen but i would just like to warn you to lock the things you have bought into one suitcase in your room. The complex itself was lovely. There were many pools and slides but the slides wernt open all day.
First choice provided some really good trips during the holiday. We went to the mud baths, to rhodes for the day, to turtle beach, the turkish baths and other places. You must go along to turle beach as it is lovely there. And also the best way to book trips is through the rep and not through the people on the beach. Along the beach are really fun things to do like paragliding, jet skiing, the dohnuts and the banana boat! All the waiters are very nice and easy to get along with when you go out to the resutrants. Places we liked best were: al fresco, the junction (for breakfast). Cant think of any names now but dont try the first place you see like we did! overall our holiday was really good apart from the bit of trouble in the apartments as i mensioned above!

magic

we were a group of 5 adults and 3 kids ( 1 an infant) .the portobello was a magic experience for the group.we went with first choice ( oh no )damn right they were the most incompetent reps i have come across in my 15 years of travel.we arrived through the night at the airport only to learn our luggage for the baby had not arrived and the buggy came of the belt in three pieces and the staff were useless.the coach driver could not find the hotel , arrived two hours late.following morning told rep of situation she pointed me in the direction of local baby store were i bought new clothes ,buggy and essentials costing me £300 +.i phoned hays travel back home and they found my luggage in athens it then took four days later to be re-united with it.rule no .1 avoid first choice at your cost.
hotel did not dissapoint at all ,big fingers was good slow food.bars were open late and the damn cockerels singing all night did'n't help the beauty sleep.we loved the place ,the people and the culture .magic 5 star.
we are going again next may but with thompsons far more superior at no extra cost we are paying the same price for thompsons as we did for first choice.so my opinion stay away from first choice u have been warned. as for the portobello brill great ,recommend it .

hated it

by TripAdvisor Member morrs222

stayed here in may with my husband and 2 daughters we have been to marmaris 9 times usually stay at club excelsior or club julian traveled with falcon.
The appartment was fusty and really cramped to open balcony door had to move the sofa bed away from the balcony door. Surprise when you did open it was like being on the set of bad girls iron steps no sun ever came on to the balcony as it was closed in it really felt like a prison. People runing up and down the steps constantly everything echoed as it was closed in.
Never no sun beds they where putting towels on the bed from 6 am just like spain. The newer blocks where lovely bright and fresh with a pool or garden veiw.
kitchen facilties where rubish.
maids came to your door really early when you told them to come back later they didnt bother. Would never go back we hated it. It ruined our holiday as where you stay is a big part of your holiday. We saw people complain everday to the reps only lady was actualy crying she wanted home.
SO BEWARE OF WHICH BLOCK YOU ARE PUT IN if I can remember D and F where the worst.

dont be blinded by the brochure!

we stayed at the portobello for a week at the beginning of september 2005 and to say we were disappointed is an understatement! We stayed in G block (or G wing as we called it as the conditions were similar to a prison cell!). the room was infested with ants, the freezer was full of ice, the shower and toilet leaked all over the floor, there was no cooker, just two rings which seemed to take hours to heat up, and the interior was old and drab!what made it worse was the view into the rooms opposite which were much newer with tvs, proper kitchen area and a toaster which is something we didnt have which, considering the apartments were supposed to be self catering, was ridiculus. the annoying thing was these rooms were the same price as ours but were of a much higher standard! However the staff were friendly and the pools were nice, despite the daily battle for a sunbed commencing at 7am!The food in the restaurant was greasy and overpriced! Turkey as a whole is a beautiful country and i would definately go again, but not to portobello!
p.s. there is a really nice restaurant called palm corner where the staff are lovely and friendly AND DONT HASSLE YOU (a novelty in turkey). its a bit of a walk but DEFINATELY worth it!

could be better

Six of us got to the hotel at 6.45am after a long but eventless journey dropped off outside the new and beautiful portobello hotel (but this is what you could of had !)taken through 2 sections of hotel to the back of the complex 'H' block like an inner city tennament block but without the health and safety ,we where four floors up without a lift, luckily for us our room had a broken sewer pipe the first choice rep was great and we got moved within 2hours (phew)to b block ground floor, much better.First choice showed us the brouchure for the new part just to get a sale they dont care where you get put ,New part great, pool great,no maid service for a full week!but would go back if in new part,P.S go to the albatross bar good value, and Donnatello boat trip(H's boat)12 quid all drinks all food all day great fun also got ripped off at pig and whistle in icemeler (not nice)
