Olu Deniz great, Montebello not so.......
Montebello Hotel, Olu Deniz.
Dalaman airport fine despite reports/reputation, uneventful both ways.
Late night check in and greeting ok, got to room and had to call maintenance as unable to secure upvc door. Came straight away and repaired in 15 mins.
Breakfast very busy, queued up and a bit fraught if you arrive between 9.40 and 10.00.
As much as you want, toast, melon, yoghourt, boiled eggs, coffee, tea, corn flakes, cheese, squashes.
Excellent experienced and knowledgeable Thomson rep Michelle, advise you take advantage of Thomson trips, be careful of trips booked elsewhere, lots of reports from other visitors of people suffering injuries, even broken bones particularly on boat trips. Other reports of people paying then having a ‘no show’on the day, can only suggest asking around, use word of mouth.
Try the excellent Truck Safaris via Thomson if poss (operator is Evergreen Travel) the guide Salih is excellent, he’ll show you the real Turkey and the Turkish people in remote villages and mountains, took us to annual ‘Oil Wrestling’ festival, and market, the locals had seldom seen outsiders, quite an experience.
Olu Deniz lovely resort, way exceeded our expectations, generally very clean, all restaurants and bars had clean modern loos and hand washing etc. Greeters outside bars and restaurants can be a pain, some a nuisance, constantly trying to drag you in, just keep walking and don’t get drawn too far in. One kept on and on at us, we eventually went in, only then to be blanked. Good range of most nationalities for food though.
Recommend the Secret Garden, first class, also the Blue Star, but you won’t go far wrong with the majority really, but be choosey as you like, it’s your choice and your spend, you don’t owe them a living.
Lagoon itself stunning, can snorkel or just float motionless looking at little fish below. Like a warm bath. Showers, changing cubicles, toilets, eateries, drinks etc and loads of shaded areas if heat too much. Watersports, paragliding from lagoon and main beach, both of which are small pebbles/shingle, easier to manage than sand really in such intense heat.
Main beach had quite strong waves at shore, but fun and cooling especially for the kids.
Oh dear, here goes…… despite all the good reports seen, something just wasn’t right. On first day we got conned when ordering cocktails, asked the price and placed order, only to find after that we were in happy hour and were overcharged. When I complained to reception the guy just shrugged his shoulders at me. Not happy about the tab/credit card system, we rejected it outright after 24 hrs, and insisted on paying cash instead, could see it running out of control. They didn’t like this. Other guests made similar comment, saying they were sure they were being overcharged on the tab. Some were told it was a compulsory system and hotel policy, and were made to use it.
We paid for a deposit box for two weeks, but were short-changed again on this (not much I know, only about £2 light), but others reported similar occurrences. It mounts up.
We only ate two light lunches here, the second was very poor and that knocked it on the head for us, and we vowed to eat out always then. Can’t accept their claim of having an ala carte menu. We passed on both BBQ nights, we’d just lost faith.
The bed wasn’t changed in two weeks, maid was reluctant to leave loo roll, and we had to hide it to make her think it was used up. We had two towel changes, on consecutive days.
The loo looked like it had never seen any bleach, and the washroom tiles and ceiling had extensive black mould spore staining, as did the shower compartment. The air con unit vents were filthy, covered in mould spores.
Our room was done late afternoon, almost the last one, by which time the mop/bucket water stank. We know this because the room stank until the floor had dried out with the door open.
Room itself reasonably modern, looked ok superficially, patio area never used, had two small chairs but too small, ok for two standing, we used it for drying area.
Pool and Jacuzzi nice enough, seemed well kept, but beware the missing vent cover in the bottom of accuse, very strong suction, someone broke toe in it allegedly. It was apparently reported and awaiting repair.
Pool area, patio, gardens etc kept well, as was the general interior.
Music consistent almost all day from MTV or CD’s, shame this, they could have made a nice serene atmosphere, (with the lovely mountain background and the all day Para gliders floating by), with just plain peace and quiet, but who are we to say, we’re only the guests after all……….
Pool area got very boisterous at times, witnessed a dripping wet Turk guest having a furious verbal against the manager on reception one day, but he sat behind the desk and carried on playing backgammon on the computer, didn’t give the guy eye contact or speak, and the Turk guy also got the shrugged shoulders !
We just kept getting the feeling that we were some sort of sales target, how many liras could they get from each guest daily?
Another guest was diabetic and they made him pay the set charge of £20 per week fridge rental to keep his insulin in, the fridge is an extra in all rooms.
Will stop now, this is getting depressing, sorry!
All said, Olu and Turkey were a joy, we had a great time and through a bit of networking whilst there we found our next venue for our return trip, and can’t wait to plan that in, but we know where it won’t be……..
Great little Resort, hotel served its purpose
My husband and I have just returned from a week at the Montebello Hotel in Olu Deniz. I Booked this through On the beach after checking out some of the reviews on this site, as usual.
The hotel, like many Turkish hotels I have since found out, is basic, fits the purpose, but spotless. The staff at the hotel were always polite, on hand, and appeared to work around the clock.
The location is about a 5 minute walk to the front, but with a nice big generous pool we found it more comfortable to spend our sunning time there.
On the way to the front you will pass many bars and restaurants, all wanting you to spend your money with them. If you don't want to stop, then politely say hello and say no thanks.
Bars and restaurnats we did try and would recommend are:
Help bar for pre dinner cocktails, including the best Mohito in Olu Deniz. There was a good vibe with some good music from the DJ. We did eat here one evening and it was fine, the menu is more American Diner than Turkish but it made a change.
Buzz Bar and restaurant. Great for the sunset up top, if you can get a seat, but one of the best restaurants in town downstairs. Food there could not be faulted, and the waiters were all polite and chatty.
Bella Gusto (I think) on the sea front was a nice change from Turkish food and served some lovely italian dishes.
One restaurant we did not enjoy was the Ottoman on the main street. The food was ok, but they over charged us, and got the service all muddled up. Of course they were very appologetic and sorted it all out, but we didn' t go back as there is so much choice.
I would avoid the wine just as its all a bit cheap and nasty, and most restaurants appeared to have the same menu on offer.
Other things we did do in our week was to have a turkish bath and massage on our first day. Its a fantastic experience and will get rid of all the dead skin so your tan will last longer. We had this done at Pasa Health Club, 2 minutes from our hotel. For £20 each we spent the whole afternoon there being pampered.
My husband also had a turkish shave, which includes the cut throat razor, burning (!) and shoulder massage. You will find many barbers offering this service.
But, one of the best experiences was our paragliding with the Sky Sports team. You can find their office near the sea front on the main street, and its well worth booking a flight with them. You will see them in the skies from Olu Deniz, and other compnies, but its Sky Sports who have the reputation. A fantastic drive up to the launch site and a great 35-45 minutes of flying time, landing on the sea front. Its one thing worth paying for as you will not find better scenery to enjoy on your journey back to the ground.
All in all, this was our first trip to Turkey, and the Montebello, Olu Deniz, and the area was all lovely and enjoyable.
One of the best hotels I have ever had the pleasure of staying in
Even though we arrived at the hotel in the early hours we were greeted with a big smile. Our bags were taken to our room for us and we were just made so welcome from the start. Im glad to say that the 1st impressions of the Montebello Hotel carried right through to the end of our holiday. I have never stayed in such a nice warm friendly establishment, Me and my girlfriend were so happy. The entire facility was spotlessly clean throughout. Our room was cleaned daily. Id never ever thought that I would write a review about any hotel but I have had such a good experience that I just felt that it was so important to let other people know what a fantastic place to stay the Montebello Hotel is.
excellent hotel in a cool resort.the pool area in the hotel was one of the best i have ever used. hotel used mainly by brits but atmoshere very friendly laidback and relaxing. the afternoon tea"come everybody" is a little bit cruise ship on land and indicates how this hotel tries that wee bit harder.worth noting is that the rooms and toilets are very small and really not for swinging cats
Friendly smiling staff
We stayed at this hotel for 2 weeks in July, the rooms are very basic as expected but the room could have been cleaner. The washbasin and shower in the bathroom were crying out for a good clean and I had to clean it myself before we could use it. In fact the cleanliness of the whole room left a lot to be desired and the towels (when they were changed) were very rough and still had some stains on them. I noticed one day our towels had been put out on the balcony to dry off rather than changed for fresh ones, the bed was never made properly and we always had to smooth the sheet out and plump up the very flat pillows every night before we got in. The swimming pool is not big enough for the amount of rooms and the sunbeds are pushed too close together so there is not enough room to move around. There was a barbecue one night a week and entertainment was a belly dancer and some other dancers which turned out to be very good for the price of £10 per person. The staff are very friendly and always smiling but we would not stay here again.
Perfect for last minute getaway
My boyfriend and I booked this as a last minute holiday having never been to Turkey and we couldn't have been happier. For the cheap deal we got the Montebello was excellent with friendly relaxed staff, a lovely pool and all within a 5 minute walk of the shops/restaurants and beach.
When we arrived we were put in a non-pool facing room and it was no bother at all to put us in a pool facing room which was really appreciated. I was impressed with the cleanliness of everywhere, it looks like they've recently had some refurbishments done.
The bar staff are very entertaining - make sure you look out for happy hour when the drinks are even cheaper and as other reviewers have mentioned the tea/cakes which are for sale around the pool in the afternoon are a really nice touch.
I would recommend the barbeque night on a Wednesday, excellent value for money with great food and entertainment.
I'm glad we went just before the schools broke up as it did get a lot busier which can make the poolside quite noisy but the beach is so close you can alternate between the two. Walk to the Blue Lagoon off the main public beach (less than a pound to enter) for beautiful water and stunning scenery.
I'm sure we will be going back to Olu Deniz and maybe even the Montebello. A week wasn't really long enough to do all of the trips on offer. We did the 12 islands boat trip and the Dalyan day/mud baths etc which were quite good fun.
You'll be sure to enjoy yourselves here. As a taster for Turkey I'm desperate to go back!
Best Holiday Ever!
I am 18 and myself and my boyfreind went on our first holiday together to the Montebello Hotel for 2 weeks from 25th June- 10th July.
Firstly we arrived at the hotel at about 3am in the morning and there was someone there waiting to take our bags with a smile on there face. We were given a pool facing room and it was very clean and very cool (free air conditioning). We could not have expected better from this hotel it was excellent for the price we paid.
The pool area is bigger than it looks in the photos in my opinion and we never had trouble getting a sunbed and parasol. Cake time at 4pm MUST be experienced, it was great. One thing I have to say about staff from this hotel is, when do they sleep?! We were there for two weeks and the same 5 people were there from at least 8am-12pm every day, and they were always very nice.
The hotel is literally a five minute walk to the beach, you just turn right out of reception and walk straight down. The beach is gorgeous, the water is crystal clear and beautiful to swim in. The lagoon is a further five minute walk and is worth a visit but we spent much of our time on excursions or at the beach.
It is also five minutes from the many reseraunts in olu deniz, two that I would reccomend above others are 'Oba' and 'The Secret Garden'. We visited the Olive Grove and personally hated it. At night time you must visit The Help Beach Bar which serve the most delicious cocktails ever!!
Excursions worth doing are The Jeep Safari which was amazing, one of the best days we had, so much fun. (Go with Focus Tours) A visit to a turkish bath, olu deniz boat trip and Dalyan. My boyfreind also did paragliding for £45 and I regret not giving it a go now.
Overall this was the best holiday we could have wished for, we are definately going back, hope to return in September 08.
Loved it! What afind!
My boyfriend and I had never been to Turkey and booked this little gem of a hotel 5 weeks prior to departure. Originally we had booked Montebello Beach but there were problems with the booking and were transferred to this one! Thank heavens we were because we just had the best first holiday together!
The staff are extremely friendly, especially George, Regi and Charlie.. Just listen out for "Come on Everybody!" "best banana here!" at cake time(4pm). He is just adorable!
The rooms are excellent, big enough with a balcony and kept extremely clean!
Food is great!
Cocktails are great!
Pool and jacuzzi are great!
plenty of sun loungers!
Beach and Blue Lagoon are a 5 min walk away!
For a great lunch go to Cousins just down the street. Definitely worth a try!
Olive Grove is great with a relaxing atmosphere!
La Mare is fantastic for Italian food!
Help Beach Bar on the front is fab for American style food and portions!
China Sun on the main strip is excellent for chinese food!
After dinner its definitely worth it to head back to the hotel for happy hour and ask George, the bar and restaurant manager for his "special" and he'll whip you up a fab, fruity cocktail!
Overall a fantastic hotel, fantastic holiday, excellent food and amazing weather! Worth it!!!!
Can't wait to return to Montebello and Olu Deniz next year...
Great , Cheap ,Friendly
Great hotel. Location was superb as just on the fringes of the resort, however we didn't realise and spent the first night saying how quiet it was. Then on the second and third nights boy did we find the main resort!!!!!!!!!
Great resort and would def go back and stay at this hotel.
Make sure you do the paragliding, we didn't and regretted it all the way back to the airport.
First visit to Turkey, and certainly not my last. Fantastic hotel and
a great find. Friendly, clean and close to everything. Excellent value for many and highly recommended!
