Marmaris for a few hours

by loftyken

Hi mates. We are a family of 2 adults and a child and are going for a cruise on the MSC Poesia. The ship is going to embark in Marmaris on Monday 13th April from 07:00 am to 16:00. Please advice what's the best to do and see in one day. Is there enough time to visit Dalyan & Caunos? Is it wise to go on tour or is it possible to make it on our own. Your comments are much appreciated. Thanks

I very much enjoyed the climb up to the old Fortress on the top of a hill.
The steps leading up to it wind around in narrow alleyways and into and out of all sorts of interesting corners. The houses are very old, pretty, quaint and interesting.

The fortress itself is now an archeology museum. The views from the top over Marmaris and the harbour are wonderful.

More details on my Turkey page.

Marmaris is a little town. You can finish all your shopping in 2 hours. It is uninteresting. There are no major important old ruins and monuments around. It is a remoute place wide away from famous antic places. ıt is better to take the ships tour to Dalyan amd Caunos although it is more expencive then your own. But going on your own it costs you much time. You might miss the ship. Thoese ship curuises are good for resting, relaxing snd getting fat but not good to explose Turkish 1001 adventures.

Our one day in Marmaris, an introduction to Turkey on a day trip from Rhodes, was one of our great memories. We wandered the streets and shops of town, had lunch, and spent two wonderful hours at a rug merchant's shop learning of Turkish rugs, sipping tea, and settling amicably on a price. The hand woven rug in our living room is a lasting memory of Turkey, and a reminder to us of how we want to go back to explore the country more thoroughly. There's nothing wrong with just hanging our in Marmaris. Enjoy whatever you decide.

Travel Tips for Marmaris

change your money to turkish lira

by mindcrime

You can change your euro/dollars/pounds in many exchange offices. Most of them don’t have commission but the rate changes sometimes so if you want to change a big amount maybe its better to find the cheapest one although the differences are not so big. The days I was there the rate with euro was 1e-1.65tl til 1e-1.68tl.

Dont forget that is a tourist town so you can easily use your euro/dollars for shopping.

by Sigra about Hakis Restaurant

I have been going to Marmaris for more than 10 years and have always enjoyed excellent service, friendship & hospitality. That was until we went to Hakis Restaurant towards the very end of the marina (near wooden bridge on corner). The waiters etc were the usual friendly guys and made us feel very welcome.
However, the usual offer of bread did not come, we were given it and charged over £5 for it at the end of the meal. We were also offered the 'usual' liquer drink at the end of the meal and were charged a total of £17 for the 2 very small drinks. The total billcame to over £50 for 2 people with only 3 Beers, 1 starter and 2 main courses.
I speak enough Turkish to get by and when I spoke with the manager he was arrogant, smug and did not want to listen to me.
I have since told EVERYONE I can in Marmaris NOT to go to Hakis Restaurant and as we have an apartment there we ensure that throughout the whole year, whoever stays there, is advised not to visit this particular venue.
Hakis Restaurant has let down Marmaris and should be ashamed of themselves. Dishes were dry, overcooked and tasteless

A carpet shop

by sjvessey

Potentially an interesting experience is to actually go into one of the carpet shops. We had no choice because this one was where we had to meet the tour guide.

They'll treat you well, offer you drinks, somewhere to sit. And then out come the carpets. It's fascinating to watch the sales technique at work, so long as you remember to just keep on saying "no" whenever they try to get you to part with a few hundred pounds for one of their rugs.
