Goreme Trip
The trip we took into Cappadocia (a 3 day tour taken from Side) was amazing. I will never forget the fantastic rock formations and the rock cut churches here. If you have a chance to come here - don't miss it you won't regret it.

I am looking for map/maps to help me with my hikes, that cover the Red and Meskendir Valleys area. It has proven a very difficult job for me, as no map covers the valleys and/or tracks/paths that exist. All through these paths are quite linear, there exist many valleys and corresponding names.
Does any one have a clue where I can get such map, or provide any map that can be useful for my hikes?
Best regards,
José
i am in göreme hiking at the moment and i have found it very hard to find proper hiking maps.
i have been told that until recently it was forbidden to make topographic maps there because of military secrets and what is available these days is still very limited.
hiking here without a proper map is not hard though.
i bought a map for 5 lira at the tourist information in göreme and that has been fine for me and i have so far hiked 9-10 valleys.
Ok, thank you for your reply. That explains the lack of proper mapping on the zone. ...and also why the tourist office wanted to sell a map. ;)

I'm not talking about gouging out somebody's real eyes, I'm talking about the Frescos!!
Most of the churches are fully painted inside with beautiful and historically important Byzantine murals dating from 900-1200 AD. They are in pretty good condition for their age, but if you have a look you will notice that nearly all the eyes of the painted figures have been gouged out.
This is because the local people are superstitious and afraid of the Evil Eye! One notable exception is the Dark Church.
Did you know that pigeons and stolks are very dear to locals in Cappadocia ? In Karaburna village we found that they actually set nests for stolks themselves : ) Unlike the other traditional(partly conservative) villages in Cappadocia this village produce wine but most importanly there are few significant ruins from Hittite-Late Hittite period.
To figure out the periods :
ASYRIAN TRADE COLONIES ( 2000 – 1725 BC )
Colonies /Kültepe/Kanis /Hattusa
Pottery wheels started to be used
Ends up with big burn down in Kültepe in 1725 BC
HITTITES ( 1720 – 712 BC )
Battle of Kadesh -1274 BC
IRON AGE ( 1200 – 750 BC )
LATE HITTITE (1200 – 650 BC )
the ihlara valley is a little away from goreme but very interesting.
it's greener than most other valleys in the region as it has a river running through it and the rocks are mostly made of basalt and therfor harder and darker than most other rock formations in cappadocia.
ihlara valley also has a couple of interesting rock churces that are worth visiting.
to get there you will need to go to the village selime and then hike from there.
it can be a little complicated with public transport, so hiring a car or a motorbike might be a good idea there.
Located right in the centre of Goreme (opposite to bus station ) provides beatiful view via its terrace and also has a lovely courtyard with lots of cushins on the grass. I love meze 'cold starters' plate with glass of cold raki and after a huge t-bone steak will do :)
