Travel Tips for Sanliurfa
Atatürk Dam is one of the largest dams in the world. The run-off from the hugh reservoir that's been created generates a lot of energy and several irrigation tunnels distributes water for the plains to the south.
I went on a tour from Sanliurfa to Nemrut Dagi. On the way we stopped at the dam and then we drove down to the Euphrates river, for the brave ones to take a dip. The water was surprisingly cold. My feet became numb after just a few seconds. It was really freeeezing!
Not far from the fish pool...
Not far from the fish pool (Golbasi) is Prophet Abraham's birth cave, which is now a site of pilgrimage. Non-Muslims can enter, and as usual with shrines, men follow the men, while women head to their own side of the cave. It is fairly cramped inside, and always crowded.
The city of Abraham (Ibrahim)
"A poor first introduction"
Our arrival in Urfa was not of the best kind, 3 o'clock at night, a taxi whos taximeter miraculously didn't work and the hotel we selected was closed. In the end the taxidriver found us a hotel, but the next morning we decided to move to another place right away. Aysin had done some good research and we ended up close to the old center of the city.
We had an interesting (but poorly guided) tour by a young guy from the tourist police office to see the old fortress on the hill. The view over the city was very good.
"The legend of Abraham (Ibrahim)"
The legend has that Abraham lived near Urfa (Harran) and came to Urfa to smash the sculptures of idols that were worshipped there. They caught him and he was sentenced to the stake. When they lit the stake Abraham was thrown away and landed in a pile of roseleaves. The fire turned into water and the branches of wood into fish. The water and fish are still the main symbol of Urfa as there is a huge park with a maze of interconnected ponds.

Þanlýurfa is one of the oldest cities of the world. It is famous for its being a birthplace for Abraham, world famous prophet of Jewism, Christianity and Islam religions.
You will find the castle where Abraham is sent to fire, and there is the pool with the different style of fishes nearby the castle.
Urfa city has been also an important city on the Crusades.
This old city is mixed with Turkish and Arab cultures.
You will enjoy history with modern views in Urfa city.I can say if you visit Turkey, you MUST also pass from this nice city.
The bazaar, or market, or souk as it would appropriately be called, as word used in Arabic countries and a word with Kurdish origins, is mesmerizing. Suddenly one feels that one is no longer in Turkiye, and one isn't even certain of the era or century anymore. Fantastic place.
