Kahraman Hotel: Kahraman Hotel
we stayed in Kahraman Hotel a basic & budget accommodation.
It's old building with more than 40 years old but clean & neat.
no breakfast included, no A/C in rooms though it was not hot, the big problem was bathroom, our rooms had ones but warm water was only available between 6-8 am & after midnight there were no water in pipes!
Included: double beds, TV, fridge, Dressing table, wardrobe, table and chairs, Shower, WC, soap.
the good point is that the hotel located in city center in Cumhuriyet cad. near to Kazim Karabekir cad. & also they know a little Persian whereas most people don't know English.
we paid 20 TL for double per night.

Hotel Ipik or Ipek: Hotel Ipik or Ipek
Hi, I was just in Van a few weeks ago..beautiful city and wonderful people. I love the Kurds! I arrived late and stayed at a place recommended by the Lonley Planet guidebook..I think it was called Hotel Aslan..anyway it is te first hotel they recommend in the their section on Van.
It turned out to be a foul, nasty, overpriced hell hole! The paint was falling off the wall in great hunks, the beds each had one sheet and smelled like old straw from a barn. To top it off I paid 30 lira. The next morning I left at first light and went to the street famous breakfast street for a fabulous meal of herbed cheese, honeybutter, cucumbers, tomatoes, bread fresh from the oven and endless cups of tea..all for 4 lira!
After my fabulous meal I wondered around lookin for a new hotel. I saw several that were around 20 lira but settled on one called Hotel or Otel Ipek or Ipik..anyway it was across from the horrid Aslan. I paid 18 lira for a very clean, freshly painted room with in room shower and sink. The toilet was in the hall. The room also came with a T.V.and remote that featured an English channel.
Van is a great city to explore. I spent a full day hiking around Van Castle.
Have Fun.
Unique Quality: The owner is a gem and his dad owns a nifty barber shop across the little street.

Hotel Bayram: A good option
I stayed in Ogretmenevi in Van. It is a budget option but not quite recommendable. So I also wanted to tell you this place. It is in the center, at the corner of two main streets. I’ve only been to their reception, because I wanted to give a friend’s greetings to the owner of the hotel. I couldn’t find him but liked the reception part. Since it seemed clean, had a good location, I found it quite recommendable. It is more than 40 years old and has a good reputation.

Van Ogretmenevi: Not good but cheap
If you are not so choosy and you want a budget accommodation, Ogretmenevi could be a good option. These places are all around Turkey and they are actually for teachers. Teachers have special discounts in these places but the prices for other people are very low, too. You can take them as hostels. I stayed there for 22 lira per night. Not very comfortable but enough.
Unique Quality: Cheap

Merit hotel Van: A room with a view
approx 6 km of south of Van city. Merit hotel is a 3 to 4 star turkish hotel chain.
The hotel in Van is located alongside the lake. The comfort and facilities are basic to ok, the price is about 50 USD for a single including breakfast which is to my opinion too much for the quality of the accomodation.
Unique Quality: Room with a view on the Lake Van

Buyuk Asur Oteli: Best Choice
In a quiet location, very clean, plenty of hot water and the nicest hotel staff. They couldn't have been sweeter, always bringing me tea and making me feel safe and comfortable. I miss them very much.
There is an internet cafe across the street and cheap tasty restaurants abound.
Unique Quality: Comfortable bed with fresh ironed sheets. Quiet. Pleasant. Budget priced. Amenable to travelers. The owner, English speaking, is a good source of information regarding the region.

Büyük Asur Oteli
Had a big room with TV and bathroom. Can't remember if I paid 15 or 17,5 miljon for one night. Two nights and laundry was
37 500 000 TL though (breakfast included). The beds are big and very confortable.
I was very happy that they had a laundryservice, but I also had cloths that had to be handwashed. I asked for a big bowl and got one (not all hotels like you to do your own washing in the room). That was very kind of them.
The manager Remzi and his brother Fevzi can organise tours to sights around Van or to other parts of Eastern Turkey.

In English it is called The Silk Hotel: Van Bizaar
Very basic and cheap, I don't have the address, but it is in the town bizaar, there are plenty more hotels like it in the bizaar.
Okay here it is, it is called Otel Ipek, the number is 216-3033 and it is on Cumhuriyet Caddesit, Sokuk 3.
It is less than $5.00 a night.
Unique Quality: The hotel also offers a tour of the area for less than $10. It goes on for the whole day. I can't tell you about it as I already knew someone in town who showed me around.

We didn't stay overnight in...
We didn't stay overnight in Van, so no recommendations there...but I can tell you about the hotel we stayed at in Mardin; the Hotel Bayraktar. Lonely Planet described it as a quite upmarket choice, one which supposedly cost as much as $20 for a night (beyond out meagre budget on that trip!), but since the guidebook was written, things have obviously gone downhill somewhat. Basic and freezing cold rooms now go for $5 a night, and the only electricity is found in the reception area. The owner is a bit of a misery-guts, and didn't really want to give us a room at all, but as there was no other alternative, he had no choice in the matter. Well, it did the job...we had shelter and got some sleep...but it was definitely a no-frills place. Oh actually, it did have one facility...a natural alarm clock in the form of a braying donkey down in the markets below!
If you really can't stand the idea of staying here, then get a minibus to Nusaybin, an hour away on the Syrian border. For some reason, this odd town has dozens of hotels, all of a high standard and costing around $10 a night for a double.
Unique Quality: Oh actually, it did have one facility...a natural alarm clock in the form of a braying donkey down in the markets below!
