Ruwais is basically an oil town supplying the wealth of Abu Dhabi. The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) built a nice housing complex with basic amenities like shopping arcade, hospital and market. Just in case you have to be around this area, at least you know where you can get your basic provisions.
Otherwise, there's absolutely nothing of interest in this small and isolated town. Bus services are available connecting Ruwais to Abu Dhabi and nearby town of Gayathi. You can also take a mini-bus (very irregular and unreliable) to the Danat Resort or Dalma Jetty. There's hardly any taxis here but I guess you could always radio one if required.
Bus Service from Dalma Jetty to Abu Dhabi
There is a bus service from Dalma Jetty/ Jebel Dhanna area to Abu Dhabi. The same bus serves Jebel Dhanna, Dhafra Beach Hotel and Sir Bani Yas Island Jetty.
In the morning, it leaves at around 8am. Sometimes you may need to change bus at Ruwais. The bus will stop midway at Tarif for a short break (very short), so make sure you don't miss the bus. It'll take 3 hrs or more to reach the Abu Dhabi municipality bus station in the middle of town. The bus is a 49-seater so it's not luxurious at all. However, it is comfortable enough for only Dh12. The driver is friendly and helpful should you need any assistance or directions. You'll probably need it because the bus signs are all in Arabic. Good sense to always reconfirm whether you are on the right bus, if you were asked to change coaches.
From Abu Dhabi, the bus leaves at 1pm back to Dalma. If you take a later bus, the bus will only reach Ruwais. From there, alternative transport like a taxi will have to be arranged. The last bus from Abu Dhabi to Ruwais is 7pm.
This bus service allows you to say, make a trip to Abu Dhabi on one day, stay a few days there and come back conveniently after normal hotel check-out time.
From Ruwais or Gayathi, I was told hourly bus services are available. But I'm not too sure on that.
Dalma Jetty is located at Jebel Dhanna area, near Ruwais. This is where you can catch a boat to Dalma Island. The area around the Dalma Jetty is a kind of bay with a beautiful sea view. You can spend a quiet evening fishing here. The place is peaceful and calm.
Not sure what is there on Dalma Island itself. According to Wikipedia, Dalma is an island approximately 20 miles (32 km) off the coast of Abu Dhabi. The population consists of about 10 thousand inhabitants, most of whom are Iranian Arabs and Qatari who have been granted United Arab Emirates (UAE) nationality. The island has many private farms for the ruling family of Abu Dhabi.
I also found a short description on the web: "Delma Island does not look like a desert strip. Rather, it is as if a giant farm has been torn out of a fertile European country and transferred to Abu Dhabi. Visitors to the island are surprised to see cabbage, cauliflower, onion, cucumber, tomato, melon, pepper, parsley, banana and mango growing here. They are even more surprised to see such trees that are alien to the area as apple, pear, strawberry, fig, almond, grape, orange, lemon, olive, kiwi and cedar. "
Danat Resort Jebel Dhanna
It seems impossible to find any reviews of this resort and I suppose it is because it is such a new place. It looks lovely on the websites I have found but I would like to know if anyone has been there or knows more about it? We are a couple with a 19-month old son who are looking to go and stay there at the end of March/ beginning of April. We have been to Dubai before but want a quiet, relaxed beach holiday this time as I am also 6 months pregnant. This resort far away from Abu Dhabi does seem nice as I said. Anyone has anymore info?
Our other option would be Al Hamra Fort in Ras Al Khaima but we found out there is construction work going on there.
Thanks for any replies!
